HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCE - 2278 - 12/8/1992 - POLICE DEPT/CODE AMENDEDORDINANCE NO. 2278 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 1 POLICE DEPARTMENT OF TITLE 6 OF THE OFFICIAL CODE BY CREATING THE APPOINTED POSITION OF COMMANDER OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF THE VILLAGE OF ELK GROVE VILLAGE _ WHEREAS, the Village of Elk Grove Village is a Home Rule Mu- nicipality as set forth and defined by the Constitution of the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, the Village, as a Home Rule Municipality, is entitled to enact legislation pertaining to its government and affairs and has such legislative authority as set forth in the Constitution of the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village, in the exercise of its Home Rule authority, is desirous of establishing the appointed position of Commander in the Police Department. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village, Counties of Cook and DuPage, Illinois as follows: Section 1: That Section 6-1-1: DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED of the Official Code be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: 6-1-1: DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED: There is hereby created and established a Police Department, an operating department of the Village. The Police Department shall consist of such full-time and part- time personnel and such other personnel as may be pro- vided by the President and Board of Trustees. Section 2: That Section 6-1-2 A. Appointments and Promotions of the Official Code be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: A. Appointments and Promotions: Appointments to and promotions within the Police Department, other than to the office of Chief of Police and the positions of Deputy Chief and Commander, shall be made by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners in the manner provided by law. Section 3: That Section 6-1-4 of the Official Code be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: 6-1-4: DEPUTY CHIEF/COMMANDER: A. Deputy Chief: There are created two positions of Deputy Chief who are to be appointed by the Chief of Police with the approval of the Village Manager. A Deputy Chief shall retain his rank and status while serving as Deputy Chief and shall revert to such rank and status, or the position of Commander, if open, when his term of Deputy Chief has ended, as determined by the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police shall designate one of the Deputy Chiefs to serve in his absence. The Deputy Chief shall perform such duties and assignments within their division and such other duties and assignments as assigned by the Chief of Police. B. Commander: There are created four positions of Commander, who are to be appointed by the Chief of Police with the approval of the Village Manager. A Commander shall retain his rank and status while serving as Commander and shall revert to such rank and status when his term of command has ended, as determined by the Chief of Police. The Commander shall perform such duties and assignments as di- rected by the Chief of Police or any Deputy Chief of Police. -2- Section 4: That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval according to law.
