Smith Village Clerk DATE: TO: FROM: SUBJECT: 28 Ad -gust 90 C. A\ Wil M Villa ge_,Mmna ger of of Police 2ECEoUED AUG 28 1990 VILLAGE MANAGER'S OFFICE Ordinance Amendment Increasing Authorized Police Officer Positions I respectfully request you direct the Village Clerk to prepare an ordinance amending Section 4A.203 of the Municipal Code Classification Plan, adding twelve (12) police officers to that classifications authorized positions, for presentation to the Village Board f r their consideration. D Favorable action by the Board will increase au' rized police officer 1 "'••• positions from sevenni (70) to eighty-t:,o (g) a number discussed during budget and other deliberations. 77 We did, and still do, Plan to !:irP sixteen (16) officers, assuming the on going testing process Produces that number of eligible candidates, and, quite honestly, it doesn't Tool: all that favorable. Thirty (30) candidates remain from the oricir,al 32e, asho attended the orientation. There were 155 who participated in the Phusical, forty-two (42) failed leaving 113 eligible to take the written examination; 59 failed the written exam. Of the 54 remaining after those testin_q phases, an additional twenty-four (24 were drooped following multiple candidate oral interviews, polygraph exams, or after no longer expressing interest. Those candidates remaining (30) have yet to undergo phusical examinations, background checks, and individual oral intervie;:,s, which will undoubtedly reduce candidate availabilitu further. The Fire 6 Police Commission is presently on schedule to afford us the ability for new police officer hires in early October. So as to avoid confusion between the hirinc of sixteen (16) officers and the requested authorization of an aecitionai twelve (12), if you recall, four (4) were previously approved bu the V11.1age Board for fiscal '91 when I sought approval to make those temporary positions permanent. Your and the Board's favorable consideration to increase police officer classification authorized positions will be appreciated. Thank you. FJE/rm 1 1 I 1
