HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTION - 34-95 - 5/5/1995 - LOCAL GUN CONTROLRESOLUTION NO. 34-95 A RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO HB -568 (LOCAL GUN CONTROL) WHEREAS, the Illinois General Assembly is considering HB -568, which enforces a statewide preemption of local gun control laws; and WHEREAS, HB -568 prohibits municipalities from providing for the best possible health, safety and welfare of their residents; and WHEREAS, HB -568 preempts Home Rule authority by eliminating the ability of any local government to regulate firearms, ammunition, components, and accessories related to firearms within their boundaries ; and WHEREAS, HB -568 would effectively eliminate the long lasting efforts of local governments to decrease and eliminate the proliferation of firearms; and WHEREAS, by forbidding local governments from passing stricter firearms laws than the State, HB -568 would allow any person who is "in possession, transports, stores, purchases, sells or otherwise deals in firearms" to effectively sell and deal these items from homes, warehouses, car trunks, or any other place; and WHEREAS, local governments are in the best position to pass legislation that protects the health and well-being of our citizens; and WHEREAS, the passage of HB -568 would be detrimental to the ability of local governments to take action to solve local problems; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village, Counties of Cook and Du Page, State of Illinois as follows: Section 1. That the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village express their opposition to this legislation. Section 2. That the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village urge the Illinois General Assembly to give serious consideration and vote in concurrence with their position in opposition of this legislation. Section 3. That this Resolution be conveyed to Governor Jim Edgar, Senator Peter G. Fitzgerald, Senator James Philip, Representative Terry R. Parke and Representative Kathleen L. Wojcik. Section 4. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval as provided by law. VOTE: AYES: 5 NAYS: 1 ABSENT: 0 PASSED this 9th day of May , 1995.
