THE BOARD OF FIRE AND POLICE COMMISSIONERS
OF THE VILLAGE OF ELK GROVE VILLAGE
HELD ON FEBRUARY 24, 1998
Chairman Bantner called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. in the Charles J. Zettek
Municipal Building, 901 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village, and noted for the record
that the following were present: Chairman Gayle B. Bantner, Alan J. Shapiro, and H.
Robert Goldsmith.
It was moved by Dr. Shapiro and seconded by H. Robert Goldsmith that the minutes of the
January 27, 1998 meeting be approved as submitted and that the Board dispense with the
reading thereof. The motion was voted upon by acclamation whereupon the Chairman
declared the motion carried.
PRESENTATION AND APPROVAL OF INVOICES
It was moved by Dr. Shapiro and seconded by H. Robert Goldsmith that the following
invoices be paid:
Dr. Boyajian $415.00 Pre employment physical for Firefighter
Clinton Cunz.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
The Board entered into Executive Session to review two (2)probationary employees:
Kelly Sweeney - 6 month review- Police Officer - It was noted by Chairman
Bantner that Ms. Sweeney has passed her 6 month probationary review due
to the comments from her supervisors indicating she is performing her duties
at an acceptance level.
Michael Pestel -6 month review-Firefighter- It was noted by Chairman
Bantner that Mr. Pestel has passed his 6 month probationary review due
to the comments from his supervisors indicating that he is performing his
duties at an acceptable level.
CORRESPONDENCE
1. Notice of retirement from Sgt. Jeoffrey Jenkins which was effective February 20, 1998.
2. Notice of resignation/retirement from police officer Ken Kvidera which will be
effective February 28, 1998.

3. Memo from Firefighter Bemie Goss dated July 26, 1994 indicating that he attempted
to speak to Dennis Gallitano regarding the current performance evaluation process
that is used for firefighters. The Fire and Police Commissioners indicated that the
current system in place used for evaluating firefighters will continue to be used.
4. A Notice of Suspension (5) days for a police officer for failing to conform to proper
safety procedures and common sense in handling a police call.
5. A memo from the Village Manager in regards to filling the sergeant vacancy that
was created with the retirement of Sgt. Jenkins. It was noted that Police Officer
Jeff Hawkins will be appointed to the position of Sergeant and that due to litigation
the other sergeant position will remain vacant at the present time. The secretary
was instructed to contact the Chief of Police to inquire as to when the effective
date of the appointment should be made. As soon as the date is determined the
Secretary was further instructed to prepare a letter of appointment.

NEW BUSINESS
The new Fire Department employee picture board was reviewed by the Commissioners and
they agreed that it looks good. Discussion ensued as to where the board should be on the
block cement wall or the wall across from the block cement wall. It was decided that the
block cement wall would be best. It was further noted that the Police Department board
should be placed along side of the Fire Department board when it is completed.
Dr. Shapiro mentioned items that the Commissioners wished to have added to their offices.
Those items include:
Paper Shredder
Coffee Maker
Supply Cabinet
Small Refrigerator
New Chairs
Hangars for the Closet
Various switches and outlets
on the walls to allow easy
access to the various office areas.
Dr. Shapiro instructed the secretary to make copies of a memo that he will give to her and
to give copies to President Johnson. If President Johnson wishes to have further
explanation of this memo then he should meet or call him for further discussion. Dr.
Shapiro further instructed to secretary to copy the Board of Trustees on this memo.

ADJOURNMENT
It was moved by Chairman Bantner and seconded by Dr. Shapiro that the meeting be
adjourned. The motion was voted upon acclamation whereupon Chairman Bantner
declared the motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 9:35 p.m.
