Residential fires usually create measurable amounts of W smoke before measurable amounts of heat are produced. Thus, smoke detectors are the number one choice for an early warning device. Assistant Fire Chief also explained that there are two different types of heat detectors available. One is a fixed temperature, and the other is a rate of rise detector. Assistant Fire Chief Vrshek did report that heat detectors could supplement smoke c detectors in areas where smoke detectors are not practical, such as garages, kitchens, laundry rooms, and attics. Trustee Czarnik questioned whether or not a heat detector in a garage would assist homeowners. Assistant Fire Chief Vrshek agreed it could be used to supplement smoke detectors. Discussion A continued as to how well the homeowner could hear the activated detector in a garage. Assistant Fire Chief Vrshek stated that detectors could be wired in series, or purchase battery operated detectors that would all activate when one detector activated. Trustee Lissner questioned how well the public is educated with regards to both smoke and heat detectors. He suggested a public education campaign to inform the public about maintenance procedures for smoke and heat detectors. When batteries should be changed, and how to test a detector, Possible suggestions ranged from pamphlets at our public buildings, information in the ViAage newsletter, the Village Web site, or local newspapers. Also noted was the Fire Department Open House in October. Assistant Fire Chief Vrshek said he would meet with the fire department public education committee to create a plan. <1 Trustee Czarnik also highlighted the fact that smoke detectors should be changed every ten years. Trustee Czarnik stated that the general public needs to be informed of this information. \ Trustees Dill, Czamik, and Lissner agreed to move forward with a public education approach to \ inform our citizens about smoke and heat detectors.
