FOREIGN FIRE INSURANCE BOARD MEETING
24...OCTOBER, 2002
In attendance: Fordon. Haverland. Reid, Rogers. Sharp. Banot( in for MacArthur)
Absent: Cotte, Jamrozek,MacArthur,D. Miller,Quinlan, Skowronski
OLD BUSINESS:
Physical fitness: Banot makes the proposal that the village would be interested in having Nejedlo
run the fitness program with his compensation following established FLSA guidelines. The village would
then be compensated for those monies by the FFIB. Banot also states that Nejedko would be running
mandatory training on the equipment but participation in actually working out following the training would
be totally voluntary. Rogers feels that the FFIB has made the major investment in the equipment and it
would be reasonable for the village to take care of payment for any follow-up instruction, especially since
thev wish to make it mandatory. Reid states that we currently have a very high usage of the equipment
with no injury claims thus far and no mandatory program in place. Perhaps the village mayor isn't aware
how much we use the equipment at this point in time. Rogers asked if these sessions are taken as
mandatory drills, would the village get compensation from the state as they do for our current training?
Haverland and Reid wonder if the FFIB is drawn into liability if we were to re-imburse the village for a
fitness trainer and a claim were filed for injury, etc,. Reid reminds the members that Nejedlo wants
medical evaluations for anyone participating in the program. Banot feels that might be true for anyone
that's hired to run a fitness program. Rogers believes the program is in the labor/management arena at this
time. Sharp thinks Nejedlo is a good choice for this program since he knows what we have to deal with on
a day-to-day basis. No resolution regarding the physical fitness program at this time.
Dumbbells: Rogers states the heavyweight dumbbells are in the works.
Barbells: Banot asks if this item can be deferred at this time due to the current economic climate.
Rogers counters that the FF11B is not really dealing with any serious"budget crunch"at this time.
Haverland points to the fact that the village is in the midst of a multi-million dollar beautification program
during this current economic downturn. Status of this item not resolved.
Computers: Rogers is looking into Read/write and Windows XP which would prevent people
from downloading anything into the computer which might mess it up.
Maps: Keenan,a guest and previous FFIB board member, states that he has all the necessary info
and budget for this purchase which should amount to under$2,000.00 for 4 maps. He will bring the info
back to the FFIB before a purchase is made.
Audio systems: Rogers states that the budget shows$2,400.00 for station audio systems approved
in the current budget. It's his understanding that they were never approved Lynn Cox is supposed to be
researching correct status.
On the subject of old business, Haverland discussed a survey he took regarding the new helmets.
His survey found 24 members who like the new helmets,43 who preferred the old helmets. Five members
were recent hires and therefore were unfamiliar with the old helmets. Ten members didn't feel strongly
about either helmet. He also had one response with no answer. The point of his survey was to focus on his
belief that proper channels were circumvented to make this purchase happen. Haverland got part of the 56
requests that we originally had for new helmets. He states that some of the people Were asked verbally
about their interest in the new helmets. Pilkington and Johnson both turned down requests for new helmets
while they were in charge of clothing since they saw no improvement in the new helmets under discussion,
according to Haverland He further states that it was Johnson's belief that a committee of more than two
people should do have done the research on a new helmet selection in conjunction with the clothing
commineelofficer. Rogers and others felt that a lesson was learned by the helmet purchase. Haverland also
took issue with the expense involved in the blue fire coats purchased by the FFIB. Fordon states he did not
like the new helmets at first, finding them uncomfortable. Peterson had a rep from the helmet company
come to the station to size FordDn's helmet and now he feels its as comfortable as the old one. Rogers to
discuss with Peterson the possibility of having someone come out to size the helmets correctly--this might
reduce the number of complaints.
