Old Business A. Community Nurse Position Trustees Bosslet, Czarnik, Gallitano and Tosto were present at the meeting to discuss the issue of adding a community health nurse to the Health Department staff. Pat Briggs, Pat McHale and Pat Bourke brought up the need for a community nurse, bringing up the fact that 24% of Elk Grove's population is over 55 years of age and that group will be aging in place over the next several years. The health care needs of that population will escalate and the medical insurance coverage will decrease. The community nurse will help fill the gap that exists within the health care system. They further pointed out the problem with the DRGs (diagnostic related diseases) , which forces hospitals to release patients sooner and sicker, thus requiring skilled nursing care in the home. A study done through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation points out this problem and calls for the need for community based skilled nursing services. They also pointed out the wellness aspect of this position, which will help residents of all ages maintain good health through immunizations, screenings and health education and support systems relative to retaining a high level of health. - 2 - Trustees' questions relative to the position were answered by Board of Health members. The Trustees will set up a meeting between the Board of Health and the Village Board to discuss the nursing position. This meeting will take place within the next few weeks. B.
