Jeffrey Priebe, Environmental Health Inspector and Jane Sloger, Community Health Nurse were introduced to the recently appointed Board of Health members. Emereency Preparedness The Health Coordinator presented facts on the Federal Governments' focus to prevent a terrorist organization from targeting the United States with a biological weapon of mass destruction. The government has identified 6 priority threat agents. The Health Coordinator included a fact sheet on Anthrax in the packet. Also included in the packet was a draft copy of the emergency operations plan (EOP) recently developed by the Health Department. This plan will be used during a disaster response in the Village. Several Board of Health members have roles in the emergency plan. When the plan is finalized the Coordinator will review the responsibilities of staff and board members. The Health, Police and Fire Departments met with representatives of ABMC to discuss emergency preparedness at the hospital. ABMC will be updating their plans and will meet with the Village in the future to coordinate disaster procedures. Giardia Update The Health Coordinator was asked to research the field on ways to test for Giardia. Testing for Giardia can be difficult and expensive. IDPH:will test stool specimens for Giardia, but water. When low chlorine levels or fecal contamination is suspected in a pool the Health Department still has the option of testing the water for E.coli. This could indicate low chlorine levels or fecal contamination,but not positive confirmation of Giardia. Flu Shots The Health Coordinator passed out the Fall Flu Clinic schedule. At the time of the meeting the Health Department had received 930 out of' 500 doses. Because of the increased cost of the flu shots this year(added cost for syringes) the Ifealth Coordinator requested the Board raise the price of flu shots from $7.00 to $10.00. A motion was made to raise the cost of flu shots to $10.00, it passed unanimously. The raise in price would also keep the Village in line with surrounding communities. West Nile Virus The Health Coordinator presented an overview of the current information on West Nile virus in the Chicagoland area. The two(2) dead crows the Health Department sent to the State of Illinois for testing were found preliminary positive for the West Nile virus. Employee Wellness Program The Wellness Committee was gearing up for the second annual "wellness walk" on October 19`h T-shirts will be distributed to participating employees Blood Drive The Health Department will hold the regularly scheduled blood drive on November P. In light of the events of September I 11h the blood drive will be held at the Elk Grove Park District Pavilion. Blood Awards Currently the Village presents blood donors who have donated 1 gallon or more with a plaque. With 476 residents now eligible for plaques this could cost the Village over$10,000.00 (average plaque cost $25.00). The Health Coordinator suggested less expensive awards. The Board asked the Health Coordinator to provide some examples of recognition at the December meeting. November Meeting Because the November Board of Health meeting would fall on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving a motion was made to cancel the November meeting and hold a scheduled meeting in December. The motion passed unanimously. Environmental Health Inspector's Report Jeffrey Priebe, Environmental Health Inspector gave an overview of recent activities in the environmental health section of the Department. A new Subway Sandwich and Big Apple Bagel are scheduled to open soon. September Activities Report Routine Inspections 83 Misc. Activities 188 Complaints 116 Citations 7 Total 394 Community Health Nurse Report—September Jane Sloger, Community Health Nurse presented the Board members with information on the new safety syringes proposed by the Federal Government. These would prevent secondary needle sticks by health providers. This could raise the cost of syringes from the current cost of about $00.15 to the$00.50' Q"1.60 range.
