Disposition of Wells
An October 7, 1988 report prepared by the Director of Public
Works was discussed in detail. It included recommendations
concerning wells, booster pumps, reservoirs, and pump house
buildings. A chart summarizing the recommendations of staff
and Committee is attached.
Additional interconnections, installation of an elevated
water tower west of I -290, additional JAWA connection west
of i-290, conversion of gas drive pumps at pump house #9 to
dual drive was briefly discussed. These matters will be
discussed in future committee meetings.

SUBJECT: Dispositio of Well Equipment & Water System Facilities
This report is divided into four (4) sections: Well Pumping Equipment,
Booster Pumping Equipment, Storage Tanks, and Pump House Buildings. In
each section the current assets are identified, physical condition noted, a
recommendation regarding disposition is made, and a brief explanation
supporting our recommendation is presented.
Well Pumping Equipment
Location Condition Recommendation

Our emergency backup supply plan includes seven (7) wells and
interconnection with neighboring communities. The capacity of wells
recommended above for retention is 7000 gpm or 10.08 million gallons per
day. This represents about 1.45 times our annual daily average usage. A
long term backup supply plan should involve an interconnection between
NSMJAWA and the Northwest Water Commission and possibly the DuPage County
Water Commission.
Booster Pumping Equipment
Location Condition Recommendation
Well # 1 3 Pumps - Operational, 30 years old, Abandon & Sell
parts difficult to obtain
Well # 2 4 Pumps - Operational Retain as front
line
Well # 6 3 Pumps - Operational Retain as front
line
Well # 7 3 Pumps - Operational Retain for
summer peaking
period
Well # 8 2 Pumps - Operational Retain as front

Booster Pumping Equipment (Continued)
Location Condition Recommendation
Well # 9 3 Pumps - 1 Operational, Retain & Convert
2 Gas Driven (manual only) gas driven pumps
to dual driven
Well #11 3 Pumps - Operational Retain as front
line
All existing booster pumps are recommended for retention with the
exception of three (3) located at Well #1. Some work is needed on most of
the pumps to increase their efficiency but repair costs should not be
substantial. Because we are recommending the abandonment of Well #1 and
the discontinued use of the storage tank at Well #1 there is no need to
retain the three (3) booster pumps located there.
Water Storage Tanks
Location Condition Recommendation
Well # 1 1 - 1.0 MG - Ground, needs painting Discontinue
operation &
investigate
other uses for
facility.
Well # 2 2 - 1.0 MG - Ground Retain as front

All water storage facilities are recommended for retention with the
exception of the tank at Well #1. 9.5 MG of storage are operated during
the peak period of May thru September. 8.5 MG is operated during the
remaining months of the year. We have not needed the storage at Well #1
since converting to Lake Water nor do we see a need in the future. One
option is to investigate the feasibility to moving this tank to the west
side of I-290 to expand capacity in our western zone.
Building Facilities
Location Condition Recommendation

All buildings are recommended for retention with the exception of the
facility at Well # 4 which is located on the Chicago Magnet Wire Property.
The buildings are low maintenance structures, sitting on property that, I
believe, cannot be sold. Some buildings not needed for water operation are
currently being used for storage of supplies. Other buildings have the
potential of a similar or higher use.
I look forward to discussing this report with you at the October 10, 1988
Capital Improvements Committee meeting.
