Repairs of Private Sewer Service Lines. on Public Property
The Committee reviewed and discussed a report from the Assistant Village Manager
dated May 16, 2001. The report was generated following a request for information
coming at the May 5 Coffee with the Village Board.
The Committee discussed the policies of Des Plaines and Schaumburg to fund the repair
of private sewer service lines that extend into the parkway or under municipal streets.
These are the only 2 municipalities out of 28 that responded to a NWMC survey that
indicated they fund private sewer repairs.
Discussion ensued regarding the survey as well as the Des Plaines and Schaumburg
policy. It was noted that the Des Plaines .and Schaumburg programs are likely costly in
terms of the direct cost to the taxpayers to fund or make the repairs and staff inspection
cost to ensure the work is being done on municipal (rather than private)property. It was
also noted that in Elk Grove the number of sewer repair permits increased 53% from the
year 1999 to the year 2000.
The consensus of the Committee was for staff to obtain additional information from Des
Plaines and Schaumburg concerning the cost and manpower requirements to fund sewer
repair work on private property. In addition, staff will determine the number of permits
issued during 2001 for sewer repair work in Elk Grove Village.
The meeting recessed at 2:20 pm and will be reconvened at a date to be determined.
