Street Re air followine Sewer Repair
The CIC reviewed a potential draft policy. Staff noted that there have been very few known
instances of a residential street needing to be excavated to repair a private service line, and the
cost for a homeowner to do so is nearly prohiibitive.
The Village's policy would have the Village replace a private sewer service line only if the line
collapsed under a Village street between the curbs. The replacement of the collapsed service line
outside the street is the responsibility of the homeowner. The rodding of the service line is
always the responsibility of the homeowner.
The consensus of the Committee was to request some modification to the policy with the
following clarifications:
1. Add language advising of the Village's responsibility to own and maintain the public sewer
system;
2. Include information in the next newsletter about the availability of Public Works to check
public mains when a customer has a sewer back-up;
3. Include in the policy having Village crews excavate the street and replace the service line
under the street. This is in addition to the;restoring the street after the repair is made.
The CIC will review the amended policy prior to its distribution to the Village Board for
consideration.
