Water Meter Replacement and Issues
Chairman Petri presented several issues from his May 20, 2004 for discussion as a follow-up to
the May 4 meeting of the Capital Improvements Committee.
Staff developed a brochure to educate residents about the remote reader issue. The brochure
includes photographs, but cannot be completed until a recommendation is made by the CIC
concerning water rates on discrepancy water.
Staff met with the company that produces the Village water meters. The water meters are only
warranted for 15 years. Village meters are between 20 years and 24 years old. They are reaching
the point of replacement.
The Committee previously recommended examining the switch-out of meters with the rate study.
For water customers with a discrepancy between the inside and outside meter, it is recommended
that the average water rate of$2.54 be charged for residential customers (business customers are
not included as their actual meters are viewed once or twice each year. Residential meters are
never viewed unless the house is selling or there is a problem).
In addition, it is recommended that a cap of$500 be instituted. The final recommendation is to
charge the lesser of$2.54 per gallon or$500 for unreported water.
The Chairman of the CIC will be sending a memo to the Village Board outlining the final
recommendation of the Committee. It is anticipated that this information will be reviewed at the
June 22 Committee of the Whole.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 am.
