The meeting was called to order at 8:15 a.m. by Commissioner Prochno. The
commissioners returned all of the youth surveys that were collected from Elk Grove High
School, Conant High School, Mead Jr. High and Grove Jr. High. The commission is still
waiting for the Queen of the Rosary surveys from David Gaeger. Mike Grygo had only
one survey for Conant High School. He explained that it is a District 211 policy to not
allow the distribution of surveys in the school. Mike kept a box down in the cafeteria and
made several announcements to the student body asking them to come down and fill out a
survey and put it in the box. The end result was one completed survey. It should be noted
that the principal was very supportive of the effort and had contacted the District 211
Board of Education to ask for special permission to distribute the surveys, but was denied.
The surveys will now be tabulated with the results to be released in a report form to
members of the commission before the April 4, 1998 Youth Commission meeting. Of
interest, more than 50 students gave thea- name, address and phone numbers and asked to
be contacted by a commissioner for further discussion. Number of responses for the other
participating schools will be released in the report.
The commission briefly discussed the progress the skateboard park committee is making
with the Park District. Commissioner Prochno informed the commission that she had been
attending these meetings. A probable site for an outdoor skateboard park will be Audubon
Park across from Grove Jr. High School. The committee will be making a proposal to the
Park District Board of Commissioners on Thursday, March 26, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. They
will be applying for a grant to help fund the park. Ashley Taylor expressed a desire to start
attending the skateboard park meetings.
Commissioner Prochno then asked the commission if they would be interested in helping
raise funds to pay for the `Bookin It" bronze statue to be placed in front of the Library.

She explained that the sculptor offered to do the piece for half price if the money to pay for
it was raised by the youth of Elk Grove. The commissioners looked at the picture of the
statue and came to the conclusion that they did not like the sculpture. They would enjoy
raising money to buy a statue for the Village Green, but not `Bookin It". They would
prefer to choose their own statue. They were more interested in a statue of a child or teen
with a backpack, roller blades or a skateboard. Commissioner Prochno said that she would
pass the information along to the Village Board.
The commissioners brainstormed on some fund-raising ideas. Some of the ideas included a
dance to be held at the Pavilion, selling pizzas and having a raffle. Some of the
commissioners said they would enjoy attending the spring showing of sculpted pieces in
Contigney. Other ideas offered were sports competitions such as basketball, volleyball and
soccer. Perhaps the commission could contact the Elk Grove Theater when it reopens
about running a special "Teen Night" when a teen-oriented film was showing and offer a
percentage of the night's ticket sales to the fund-raising effort.
Mike Grygo stated that he would like to make one more attempt to get some Conant
surveys filled out.
Chris Prochno and Barb Lahtinen agreed to meet on Sunday, March 22, 1998 to compile
all the information from the surveys. \
The next scheduled meeting of the Youth Commission will be Saturday, April 4, 1998 at
8:00 a.m. in the back of the Council Chambers.
The meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
