It was noted that some of the absent commissioners might have forgotten about the
meeting. Barb Lahtinen offered in the future to call each commissioner the evening before
our meetings to remind them to come.
The results of the surveys taken at Mead, Grove Jr. High and Queen of the Rosary school
were discussed. Elk Grove High School results will be ready by the next meeting.
What seemed to stand out on all the surreys was the need for entertainment or a place to
hang out.
Ron Foster asked whey these kids don't go to the Teen Center. The student
commissioners explained that they don't like to hand around with the kids that are there
and that there is little to do there. The students want to listen to music and dance. Ron
asked how we could change the image of the Teen Center. The students suggested having
a dance there with a DJ or band.
Ashley Taylor and David Gaeger said that they knew of some Punk Bands that might play
at a dance. It was then suggested to go with a DJ so that a larger variety of music could
be played.
The commission discussed some concerns relate to a dance, clean-up of the facility, Queen
of the Rosary parking lot problems and how to handle discipline.
The commissioners agreed that there would be no charge for admission. A concession
stand would sell pop and candy bars with profit going back into the Youth Commission
funds. The target age group would be 7th and 8th graders.
z
Publicity was also discussed. Some of 1he commissioners wanted to publicize through
word of mouth. Others wanted flyers and posters. It was agreed upon that there would
be a balance of both methods.
A tentative date for this dance was selected. Friday, May 15th from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30
p.m. The dance will be called, "The Premier".
Ron Foster will check on the availability of the Teen Center for that date. He also
suggested using the Pavilion's multi-purpose room if needed.
Because of the closeness of the May date, the Commission will meet on Saturday, April
11, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chernick Conference Room.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
