MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
SATURDAY, ]FEBRUARY 5, 2000
8:00 A.M.

Chris thanked the Commission for their participation in the Adopt-A-Family Christmas
program. She shared a"thank you" letter from the family that they sponsored.
Ashley shared some information on the Yellow Ribbon Campaign at Elk Grove High
School. She talked about how the Suicide Prevention Program was promoted and how
we can involve Conant High School next year. Brian will help out promoting it there. It
was noted that next year we should promote more community involvement. Pat talked
about how at his school, they tied yellow ribbons to the locker handles to increase
awareness.
Scholarships
Chris will ask Tom to help her create a scholarship appreciation. It was decided that we
will not ask for a grade point average or i lass ranking. Each applicant will write a short
essay on their involvement in the community. All the members of the Commission
would like to be involved in the selection. Their names will not be given out during the
selection process. The scholarship will be promoted through the newspaper, Channel 6
and the Village sign. Applications should be available the beginning of March with the
deadline for application submission being May 1, 2000. A certificate will be presented
to the student winners and they will be reimbursed when they pay their tuition.
Parade
The Commission will participate in the Parade. Our theme will be "Flag Day". Chris
will request an astronaut to attend and ride on the float.

We will also sponsor a poster contest in the elementary schools with winners at different
age levels. The deadline for the contest will be May I, 2000.
Ashley Taylor was selected to attend a Student Leadership Workshop on February 17`h.
She will report back to the Commission on the workshop at the next meeting.
The meeting concluded at 9:00 a.m.
The next meeting will be Saturday, March 4, 2000 at 8:00 a.m.
