Call To Order
Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM.
Action Items: Approval of the Minutes
There was a motion by Ann Feichter to approve the minutes of the February 17, 2007 meeting, second
by Dick Scholten. The minutes were unanimously approved.
Department Director's Report
Anti-Smoking Campaign
Logo and poster slogan contest
The Director presented the winning Smoke Free Elk Grove logo and poster contest winners. The Board
members agreed that the students did an excellent job creating the logos and posters. Approximately
140 posters were entered into the contest. A panel of Village employees chose the contest winners. The
Director stated that the goal of the anti-smoking campaign was to educate people to the consequences
of smoking and secondhand smoke.
Smoking Cessation
The Director and Chairman met with representatives of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). GSK is the
pharmaceutical company that developed and distributes the nicotine replacement therapies (NRT)
NicoDerm CQ (patch),Nicorette(gum), and Commit(lozenge). They also assist in facilitating
smoking cessation programs. They agreed to provide NRT at a discounted cost to the Village.
Kenneth Young Center's In Touch program facilitators will be developing a survey to determine how
best to provide smoking cessation programs and therapies to the community. The residents will be able
to access the survey on the Smoke Free Elk Grove website. The results of the survey will help the
Village provide effective smoking cessation programs. Information on how to access the survey will be
provided in the next Village newsletter.

Smoke Free Forum
On February 27`h, Mayor Johnson hosted a Smoke Free Forum. The Director and Chairman were in
attendance. All restaurant owners/operators were invited to present their ideas and suggestions on how
to best advertise and promote smoke free dining and entertainment in Elk Grove. The information
gathered at the forum will be used to develop an effective advertising campaign. Staff will explore the
various media venues available to determine the best advertising strategies. A follow up meeting will
be held on March 27`h
A number of Board members remarked that restaurants that they frequent haven't noticed a drop-off in
business. The Director reported that surveys show many smoking customers who initially leave after a
smoking ban goes into effect come back.
Health Risk Assessment
The employee health risk assessment will kick off with two screening sessions on April 10`h and 12th
ABMC will be providing the services to the Village. The screenings include blood pressure, lipid
profile, blood sugar(glucose) measurement, and body fat percentage. The process should take about 15
minutes. This will be followed up by a confidential e-mail survey. The employees will receive a
personal health risk assessment. The Village will receive a group aggregate report.
Household Hazardous Waste Event
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will be hosting two household hazardous waste events
in the vicinity of the Village. On May 5th at Schaumburg High School and June 2❑d at the Dupage
County complex in Wheaton.
Document Destruction Event
The Village will be hosting a document destruction event on June 23rd from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM-at
the Elk Grove High School. SWANCC will provide a document destruction company to shred paper
documents. Residents will be able to bring personal papers and documents for shredding and
destruction. There is no cost for the program and proof of residency will be required.
Medication Drop-off
SWANCC will be providing a collection and disposal program for unused/expired prescription drugs
and sharps (needles). Residents will be able to drop off unused or outdated prescription drugs,
medications, nonprescription drugs, and sharps at the Health Services Office. The program will
initially run from May I"to August 31st
Yard Waste Collection
Yard waste collection will begin on April lsc
Electronic Recyclin2 Collection
SWANCC will be providing pick up of old computers and electronic equipment right at the resident's
doorsteps. For$25.00 residents will be able to place six items out for pick up. All residents need to do
is contact SWANCC to schedule a pick up.
Influenza Outbreak
Queen-of-the-Rosary has been experiencing a flu outbreak in the student population.
About 30-35 students have come down with flu-like symptoms. Three students were diagnosed with
Type B influenza. The school is following strict hygiene practices in order to control the outbreak.
Table Top Exercise
On March 27, 2007, Health& Community Services staff joined with Police, Fire, Public Works,
Village Manger' Office, and Elk Grove High School representatives to participate in a emergency
preparedness table top exercise. The exercise was held to test the readiness of the Village in the event
that the Village had to implement its Mass Pharmaceutical Distribution Plan. The Cook County
Department of Public Health (CCDPH) conducted the exercise. The Village received high marks for its
plan and readiness.
AVERT
The All Volunteer Emergency Response Team for the Department is still in its formative stages.
AVERT would be activated during an emergency or disaster. The Fire Department has proposed
forming a volunteer emergency response team based on CERT (Community Emergency Response
Team), a nationwide program designed to help protect an individual, his or her family, neighbors, and
neighborhood in an emergency situation. The Department will be joining with the Fire Department to
recruit and train a volunteer corps.
Summer Intern
The Department has been conducting interviews of candidates for a Department summer intern. The
applicants are college students finishing up their degree with a major in environmental or community
health. They are required to complete 300+hours in a student practicum.
National Public Health Week
April 2-8 has been designated National Public Health Week. The Director included a copy of a
proclamation signed by the Mayor recognizing National Public Health Week.
Village Complex Reconstruction
On February 12th, the Department met with the architect for the new police and administration
building. The meeting was held to incorporate Department ideas and comments into design plan.
Community Service Coordinator Report
Easter Basket Donations
The Community Service Coordinator will be using the food pantry and individual donations to fund
the Family Easter Baskets.
Volunteer of the Year
The Volunteer of the Year award deadline was March 16th. The Coordinator and volunteer Board
members would stay after the meeting to decide on this year's recipient.
Village Voice Concert
The annual Village Voices Concert was held at Elk Grove High School on March 4th. The concert is
free but attendees are asked for donations. This year donations amounted to $1,800.00. They are used
for the Village Housing Fund.
Interfaith Council Prayer Breakfast
The Interfaith Council will hold its annual prayer breakfast on Friday, May 4th. The breakfast will be
held at Queen-of-the-Rosary.
Kenneth Young Garage Sale
The Kenneth Young Center Garage Sale still has not found a site,but Elk Grove High School is now
the most likely location. Two tentative dates have are being considered, June 30th or July 7th.
Senior Directory
The newly revised Senior Directory will be ready for May distribution.
