Department Director's Report
MRSA/CAMRSA/Staph Infections- The Director presented an overview of the new
"Superbug", Methicillin-Resistant Staphococcus aureus (MRSA). Until recently MRSA
was a problem in hospitals and health care facilities. Now it is being reported in the general
population. This is known as CA-MRSA, Community Associated Methicillin-Resistant
Staphococcus aereus. 30% of the population carries Staph in their noses and on their skin.
Most infections show up as pimples or boils, but some can be red, painful, swollen and
have drainage. More serious infections can cause pneumonia and blood and joint
infections. Staph is usually spread by contaminated hands or close skin-to-skin contact.
CA-MRSA has been associated with children and young athletes. Staph infections can be
prevented by following good personal hygiene, properly treating and covering open
wounds or cuts, and cleaning environmental surfaces. The Director provided an
informational flyer on Staph infections.
TB Program- The TB program is still unclear. The Department did not hold a November
TB clinic. The Department will continue to dialog with the Cook County Department of
Public Health to determine what options will be available in the future. The Board of
Health & Community Services will continue to monitor the TB program to determine
continued viability.
Flu Clinics- All scheduled flu clinics for the 2007-2008 influenza season have now been
completed. Four scheduled Village-wide clinics were held along with three clinics at senior
living complexes. 490 flu shots were administered at all the clinics. 126 flu shots were
administered at the children's flu clinic on October 30th. 149 employees received flu shots.
Medication Drop-off- The unused pharmaceutical and non-prescription drug, and medical
sharps program is continuing. Residents can drop off these items any time during normal
Department business hours.
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)- The Director is still awaiting word from SWANCC
as to when the compact fluorescent light disposal program will begin. The Director hopes
the program will begin early next year.
West Nile virus (WNV)- There were 94 cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in Illinois. There
were four deaths associated with the virus. There were 3,265 cases of WNV nation-wide
and 92 deaths.
Yard Waste Program- Curbside yard waste pick up by Waste Management will continue
until December 15th. Christmas trees for recycling will be picked up by Waste
Management the first two weeks of the new year. Residents must place out clean trees to
be recycled. The trees are chipped for landscaping by the Village.
