Cavallini, Director of Health & Community Services Linda Blair, Community Service Coordinator Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM. Action Items: Approval of the Minutes There was a motion by Jim Morrill to approve the minutes of the October 17, 2007 meeting, second by Anne Feichter. The minutes were unanimously approved. Anti-Smoking Campaign Great American Smoke Out(GASO)-The American Cancer Society's, Great American Smoke Out was held on November 15th. To promote this anti-smoking message to students, the Elk Grove High School Student Practicum Student Group held a number of events and activities at the school related to smoking and smoking cessation. The students set up an information booth Smoking Cessation-Smoke Free Elk Grove will be sponsoring a smoking cessation program on January 14, 2008. The Department will be promoting the class during December and in January leading up to the classes. Participants will be required to pay a registration fee of$25. This will be reimbursed in full if the person attends all the classes. The cessation classes last seven weeks. Smoke Free Elk Grove will also be sponsoring Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U.) training on December 3rd. Students from Elk Grove High School will be trained to talk to students in elementary and secondary schools about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke. Department Director's Report MRSA/CAMRSA/Staph Infections- The Director presented an overview of the new "Superbug", Methicillin-Resistant Staphococcus aureus (MRSA). Until recently MRSA was a problem in hospitals and health care facilities. Now it is being reported in the general population. This is known as CA-MRSA, Community Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphococcus aereus. 30% of the population carries Staph in their noses and on their skin. Most infections show up as pimples or boils, but some can be red, painful, swollen and have drainage. More serious infections can cause pneumonia and blood and joint infections. Staph is usually spread by contaminated hands or close skin-to-skin contact. CA-MRSA has been associated with children and young athletes. Staph infections can be prevented by following good personal hygiene, properly treating and covering open wounds or cuts, and cleaning environmental surfaces. The Director provided an informational flyer on Staph infections. TB Program- The TB program is still unclear. The Department did not hold a November TB clinic. The Department will continue to dialog with the Cook County Department of Public Health to determine what options will be available in the future. The Board of Health & Community Services will continue to monitor the TB program to determine continued viability. Flu Clinics- All scheduled flu clinics for the 2007-2008 influenza season have now been completed. Four scheduled Village-wide clinics were held along with three clinics at senior living complexes. 490 flu shots were administered at all the clinics. 126 flu shots were administered at the children's flu clinic on October 30th. 149 employees received flu shots. Medication Drop-off- The unused pharmaceutical and non-prescription drug, and medical sharps program is continuing. Residents can drop off these items any time during normal Department business hours. Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)- The Director is still awaiting word from SWANCC as to when the compact fluorescent light disposal program will begin. The Director hopes the program will begin early next year. West Nile virus (WNV)- There were 94 cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in Illinois. There were four deaths associated with the virus. There were 3,265 cases of WNV nation-wide and 92 deaths. Yard Waste Program- Curbside yard waste pick up by Waste Management will continue until December 15th. Christmas trees for recycling will be picked up by Waste Management the first two weeks of the new year. Residents must place out clean trees to be recycled. The trees are chipped for landscaping by the Village. Budget 2008-2009- The Department has begun to work on the budget for fiscal year 2008- 2009. The Director will review the budget with the Board at a future meeting. Blood Drive- At the November 3rd Elk Grove Community Blood Drive, 49 pints of blood were donated, six people were deferred. The next blood drive will be January 26, 2008. Community Service Coordinator Report Holiday Adopt-a-Family-The Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program has reached it capacity. The program will serve 42 families this year. Donors have been eager to sponsor a family for the Holiday Season. Distribution of the dinners and presents will be at the Fire Administration Building, 901 Wellington on Friday, December 21, 2007. Salvation Army Bell Ringing- Community Services will not be overseeing the Salvation Army Bell ringing Campaign this year. This is due to the logistics involved with distributing and storing the kettles with the new Administration and Police Department Complex under construction. The Community Services Coordinator and Community Services Senior clerk attended a kick-off dinner for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign in Chicago. Post Office Senior Well-Being Check-The Community Services Coordinator will be working with the Police Department and Post Office to develop a program to check on seniors. Postal carriers will notify the Village when they notice unpicked up mail at a senior's home or dwelling unit. Financial Assistance-September Salvation Army Elk Grove Housing Fund 6 families assisted- $1,200.00 4 families assisted- $ 327.53 Food Pantry 42 families assisted, 118 individuals Environmental Health Inspector's Report-November October Activities Routine Inspections 69 Misc. Awardees do not have to live in the Village; they may also work in the Village, to be nominated. Old Business None New Business There will be no meeting in December. The Chairman asked for a motion to cancel the December meeting. A motion was made by Lois Colaprete; it was seconded by Mary Paliganoff. The motion carried. Anne Feichter made a motion to adjourn the meeting; it was seconded by Nancy Czarnik. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM.
