Chairman Christie opened the meeting with a brief statement on what the Village hopes to
accomplish through the Village-wide Anti-smoking Campaign and Smoking Cessation Program.
The American Cancer Society, Alexian Brothers Medical Center, and the American Lung
Association were all represented. Each service provider gave a 20-minute presentation on how
their services can provide the Village with an effective anti-smoking and/or smoking cessation
program(s). A question and answer period followed each presentation.
Representatives from the American Cancer Society made the first presentation. The American
Cancer Society provides a Community of Excellence award to communities that show a
commitment to improving the health awareness of the community. The Community of
Excellence provides recognition for initiatives being provided in a community. They also can
provide the Village with cancer awareness and tobacco prevention programs. In addition, they
sponsor programs such as The Great American Smoke Out and Great American Health Check.
The American Cancer Society can also provide brochures and videos on a number of tobacco
prevention topics.
Dr Charles Baum, Vice President of Health Affairs, Alexian Brothers Medical Center, opened
his presentation with information on a new State of Illinois initiative called Action for Healthy
Kids. This is a wellness policy that school districts are required to provide their children. They
also will be providing 100 free lung scans, $250.00 value, to residents enrolled in their smoking
cessation program. In addition, they will be providing Village employees with a health risk
assessment and follow up program to look at long-term health risks.
The American Lung Association also can provide a number of programs and initiatives for an
anti-smoking and smoking cessation campaign. They promote their Freedom from Smoking
program and operate an Illinois Tobacco Quitline in partnership with the Illinois Department of
Public Health. In addition they have numerous brochures and pamphlets on anti-smoking issues,
and have a Tobacco Projects Coordinator on staff.
Although they were not represented the American Heart Association also has programs and
information geared towards smoking and heart disease.
The information gathered at this special meeting will be discussed at the regularly scheduled
Board of Health meeting on May 17, 2006. Board of Health members not able to attend the
meeting will be provided with copies of all materials handed out by the various service
providers.
