Cavallini,Director of Health & Community Services Approval of the Minutes The minutes from the Board of Health meeting held on May 17, 2006 were unanimously approved. Reoreanization of the Board of Health At the May 18thCommunity service board meeting, Mayor Johnson announced that he and the Village Board made a decision to combine the Board of Health and Community Service Board into one Board. The reorganized Board would start out with all current members of both boards, and eventually be comprised of an eleven member Board. Jim Christie has been asked to remain as chairman of the new Board. Jim Christie attended the Community Scrvice Board meeting to discuss the transition. Jim Christie, the Director of Health &Community Services, and Community Services Coordinator will meet prior to the August meeting to discuss how the new Board meetings will be structured. The new Board will meet for the first time in August. As part of the restructuring, regular attendance will be expected. The Village Board will need to amend the current ordinances governing the Board of Health and Community Service Board to create this new Board. That will take place at a future Village Board meeting. Committee for a Smoke Free Elk Grove The Committee for a Smoke Free Elk Grove met for the first time on June 12`h. Fifteen people were in attendance. The Committee is comprised of a number of provider agencies (American Lung Association,American Cancer Society, etc.), ABMC, and community leaders. Jim Christie acted as facilitator for the meeting. The participants provided lots of ideas and information. The next meeting is scheduled for June 26, 2006. Copies of the member list and minutes were provided to the Board. Summer Intern Gabrielle Blossom started her internship with Health Services on June 12`h. Gabrielle is a junior at Illinois State University majoring in Environmental Health. Her main duties will be investigating complaints. She will also conduct inspections of low risk food establishments and swimming pools. She will also be asked to conduct a project during her internship. Food Preparation Sink Ordinance Health Services has provide the Village Attorney with a proposed amendment to the Food Service and Retail Food Store Codes adding a paragraph regarding the installation of food preparation sinks in all restaurants and food stores. Food services establishments and retail food stores that prepare food on the premises will be required to install a preparation(vegetable) sink in the kitchen area. The sink shall also be required to have at least one drain board. Preparation sinks are used to clean and prepare meats seafood and produce. They are also used for cooling hot foods. Use of the preparation sink prevents cross-contamination of the equipment and hand washing sinks and contamination of food products. Unused Medication Disposal The prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical and medication drop-off was conducted on May 31, 2006. Health Services and the Elk Grove Park District collected two and a half large garbage bags of unwanted and unused medications. The medications were transported to a Cook County Sheriff's site for proper disposal. Park District Meeting The Director plans to attend an Elk Grove Park District meeting to discuss the topic of avian (bird) flu. They are interested in basic facts and their options should the avian flu become a pandemic in Elk Grove Village. The presentation will take place sometime this summer. West Nile virus Health Services has submitted three birds to the Cook County Department of Public Health for West Nile virus testing. So far the results have not come back from the Illinois Department of Public Health. The State of Illinois will be testing an expanded list of bird species this year. Only crows and blue jays were tested in the past. July Meeting A motion was made to cancel the July Board of Health meeting. The Board of Health normally does not meet in July.
