Village Manager Ray Rummel referenced his memo dated July 14, 2008 to the Village Board
concerning paramedic training. The Village is currently sending three (3) additional Firefighters
to paramedic training because Firefighter John Forde just announced his retirement. Firefighter
Peter Gutzmer who is also a paramedic will then be promoted to Lieutenant. The Village is also
down two (2) additional paramedics due to medical conditions. Furthermore, in four(4) months,
a total of six (6) paramedics will be eligible to retire. The Foreign Fire Board has agreed to pay
for the training of three(3) paramedics if.the Village trains four(4)paramedics. It was the
consensus of the Board to increase the authorized paramedic strength to 58 for several years until
we move past the retirements, and then reduce the authorized strength back to 55 paramedics.
Northwest Community.Hospital has a monopoly on paramedic training at this time. Northwest
Community Hospital is the only place for paramedics to be trained on our system to be held free
of liability. Even if an employee is previously certified, they must then go through this program.
Schaumburg, Wood Dale, Northern Cook County, Lake County, and DuPage County paramedics
are all trained at Northwest Community Hospital.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:29 p.m.
