COORDINATOR'S REPORT -- November 1983
Information and referral during the month of October was very busy. A total
of 121 calls were received, 26 of which requested financial assistance.
Salvation Army assisted in six cases. In two of these situations individuals
were provided with emergency lodging in a local motel, three were provided
assistance with utility bill payments and one received assistance with rent.
Six calls involved referrals for food stamps-and/or emergency food assistance
through food certificates and the food pantry. Additionally 3 calls requested
low-cost medical care. . Usually high were the number of calls (8) which
involved handicap problems.
During the first week. of November over 40 calls have been received by
Community Service, which is exceptionally busy. 16 of these calls related
to financial problems, 9 of which requested Thanksgiving food baskets.
Tom Rogers, a senior at Elk Grove High School, has. been assisting Community
Service with the holiday food drive. He is working on his Eagle Scout
badge and will do the major planning and coordinating of the Thanksgiving
food drive for his project.
In response to the possible -District #59 teacher's strike- on Wednesday,
November 16th, Community Service has set a meeting of various community
agencies for Monday, November 14, 1983 at 9:30 a.m.. at the Park -District's
Cedar House to establish alternative child care arrangements for working
parents. Those participating in the meeting will include the Park District,
Youth Services of Elk Grove Township, Elk Grove. Library, Elk Grove Township
Community Day Care Center and Police Department Youth officers.
I attended:a meeting on Schaumburg's Shared Housing program, a program which
primarily addresses the tremendous local demand for- low-cost senior housing.
This program attempts to match seniors with seniors so that they can share
housing expenses. Schaumburg has hired a part-time housing counselor to
coordinate this program. After this initial year of the :program, they hope
to get other communities involved in 'sharing the expense of this program
as it is felt this program can be more effective serving more than one
community.
The Elk Grove Rotary Club has informed me that they will be donating $500°
worth of food certificates to the Community Service office to assist with
our holiday food drive. They are also contributing $2,500 to the Meals-on-
Wheels program. A comparable amount was raised by the seniors at the Village
Grove complex and donated to the Meals-on-Wheels program.
The program on latch-key children at the library had a very poor response.
Only two parents and several "professionals" were in attendance.
}
Efforts to enlist Salvation Army bellringers are underway. Any assistance
the Board can offer will be very much appreciated.
