HaAA iz, S ecA etaA y i I I i I COORDINATORS REPORT -- March 1983 i I i During the month of February, Community Service received 91 Information and Referral calls. Service requests for financial assistance, child care and senior services were among the major reasons for calling. Year-to-date statistics reflect a 50o increase over the same period in 1982. The final program on Parenting your Teen - Success in School received an i audience of over 40 parents. In all, a total of 130 parents attended the three programs sponsored jointly by Community Service and Elk Grove 'Library. A survey was completed on what additional topics these parents would like to see offered. i Plans for the Day Care Training program were initiated through a mailing to all day care centers and homes in.the Village to find out what topics were of greatest interest. After compiling the results, arrangements will be made with Elk Grove Township Day Care Center to sponsor this event. The Citizen's Advisory Council of the Mental Health Center met recently to discuss current activity at the center. Administrative staff is being reduced while the Center anticipates significant funding cuts at both the township and state level. Jud Stone, Executive Director, spoke of the gap in funding from Elk Grove Township. It appears Schaumburg .Township will be providing the Center. with $120,000 while Elk Grove Township will offer $40,000. Mr. Stone urged community support in contacting local legislators to support continued backing of community mental health centers. The Senior Counseling Program's continuation is being threatened with possible withdrawal of funding from the Department of Mental Health. This month I provided a Youth Employment workshop for a career's program at Grove Junior High School. The Youth Employment Service and tips on how to find a job were discussed. I attended a meeting of the Health Directors of the Northwest Municipal Conference on services from the Cook County Department of Public Health. I was asked to attend due to my involvement with Village residents' need for home health care. Many communities in the area are frustrated by the lack of home health services available to Medicaid and Medicare recipients, since new regulations have put restrictions on the availability of this service. Those who are unable to pay for home health care are being forced to go without. For the past several months Community Service's efforts at providing community education have been furthered by the Elk Grove Herald. While the monthly Coordination of Service program has addressed the dducational needs of the .social service community, the Herald has provided a feature article on this same monthly topic for the public's awareness .of various social concerns. Thus far features have addressed domestic violence, single parenting and teen pregnancy. This month's topic "Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and Emotional Over- eating" is also to be featured in the Herald. Director of Planning Alexian Brothers Medical Center 800 Biesterfield Road Elk Grove Village, I1. 60007 Dear Ms. Farley: The Community Service Board has voted unanimously to support Alexian Brothers in its endeavor to meet the requirements of obtaining the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant for senior citizen programs. It is our understanding that this grant of $650,000 would be spent over a four year period to provide a comprehensive list of support services to seniors in their own homes and within the community. We heartily support this effort as we see a strong need for these services in our Village and among our senior citizen population. We are most hopeful that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will choose Alexian Brothers as one of the twelve hospitals in the country to receive their grant. Sincerely, Mel Mack, President Community 'Service Board i MM/mlv cc: Dan MacLean 901 \\1171-1_INGTON AVENUE • TELfiI'IION(: 43J 3Jnn • ELK GIt7\'I?\ ILI_GI:. 11.I_INntti 60007
