Action Items: Approval of the Minutes There was a motion by Dr. Labinsky to approve the minutes of the March 19, 2008 meeting, second by Georgia Landt. The minutes were unanimously approved. Community Service Coordinator Report Rebuilding Together - Rebuilding Together is a program that provides home repairs for seniors and people with disabilities. Their annual event will be held on May 10`h. Volunteers perform all work. A major source of funding comes from the Corporate Relocation Counc)l, which is comprised of mortgage brokers and realtors. This year they raised $13,000 for repair work. The Community Services Coordinator (CSC) is the president of the board of this group. Trustee Czamik asked, "What are the.criteria to qualify for work". The CSC stated the homes must be owner occupied, the homeowner must earn less than 530.000/year, and they must live in the home for five years subsequent to the work being performed. Northwest Housing Partnership (NWHP)- The NWHP is another home improvement program in the area. Homeowners can receive up to $2 ,000 in home repairs. The money is paid back at the time the home is sold. The money comes from Federal Block Grants. Paint-A-Thor-Paint-A-Thon is another program that provides homeowners with free help to help fix up their home. Volunteers, usually from local churches, businesses, and high schools, provide all work. A paint company provides the paint. A date of September 13`h is set for this event. Carrier Watch Program- The CSC stated that the carrier watch program has been a success. There were two calls made to the Department, both of which turned out to be fine. People are continuing to sign up. Senior Service Directory-The updated Senior Directory was provide to all Board members. Easter Holiday Adopt-A-Family- The Department received a generous donation of hams from the Elk Grove Lionesses and Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. Elk Grove Villa.ee Volunteer of the Year- The Elk Grove Village Volunteers of the Year will be presented at the Village Awards Dinner on April 25`h. Betty Jones from Kenneth Young Center nominated Dick McCloughan and Marion Chrabot was nominated by staff at the Elk Grove Senior Center. Treasure's Galore (Garage Sale)-Plans for the Treasure's Galore have been moving along. The CSC received a good response from the Villager article. Financial Assistance-March Salvation Armv Elk Grove HousinjZ Fund 5 families assisted- S919.65 5 families assisted- 5494.75 Food Pantry 48 families assisted Anti-Smoking Campaign Smoking Cessation- The inaugural smoking cessation class completed in March. The next class was scheduled to begin on April 7`h, but the class had to be cancelled because the instructor was ill. The class did begin on April 14`h. Seven participants have signed up. Department Director's Report TB Program- Letters were sent out to all food establishment and retail food store owners/operators informing them of the changes to the TB ordinance. Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)- The Director provided a listing of the SWANCC communities accepting two (2) or four(4) foot light tubes. The Department is not accepting light tubes at this time due to storage constraints. Blood Drive- The next blood drive will be held on April 26`h. Earth Day Event- The Elk Grove Park District is holding an Earth Day event on April 20`h from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Olmstead Park. The event celebrates the opening of the Park District's Nature Shack. The nature center will be used for summer camp programs. Recycling Newsletter- The Director is currently working on an updated version of the recycling newsletter. The newsletter will be mailed out to all households. It is hoped the newsletter will encourage residents to increase their recycling efforts. Last year there was a downturn in the amount of recycling in the Village. Department Summer Intern- The.Department has chosen a candidate for the position of summer intern. Frank Sowa, a senior at Northern Illinois University will be staring his internship in May. Trustee Czamik asked if other communities provide a summer internship program? The Director stated several neighboring communities (i.e. Arlington Heights) provide internships for students. Computer & Electronic Recyclinlz- SWANTCC will be offering the at home pick up of computers and electronics program again this summer. Residents can place out up to 6 items for pick up for a S25.00 fee. The Director stated that a Village business recycles computers and electronics. The company ARC is located on Mark Street. The Director will provide information on the company at the next meeting. Department Events & Activities- The Director provided the Board with a list of activities, events, and clinics hosted or performed by the Department. Environmental Health Inspector's Report-April March Activities Report Routine Inspections 54 Misc. Activities 421 Complaints 61 Citations 6 TOTAL 542 Trustee Cazrnik asked what score (rating) would necessitate the reinspection of a food establishment? The Director stated that the score is not important as the type of violation(s) noted by the inspector. Jimmy John's should be opening in May. The Director stated that the Village does not compensate the nursing interns. Nursing students also require field experience in community nursing as part of their studies. Trustee Liaison Report- The Employee, Boards, and Commissions Award Banquet is April 2 th The Farmers Market is scheduled to open on June 4`h. It will run until the end of September. Old Business None New Business- Kenneth Young's "Walk for the Mental Health of It" will be held on May10, 2008 at Busse Woods. There was a discussion regarding the cougar that was shot by police in Chicago. Cougars have been seen in Wisconsin for several years. Dr. Labinsky had a personal experience with a cougar in Wisconsin several years ago. There have been several reports of cougars seen in Illinois before the one shot in Chicago. It will remain to be seen if cougars, and possibly wolves, will begin to inhabit Illinois on a regular basis. Sal Pace made a motion to adjourn the meeting; it was seconded by Georgia Landt.
