Action Items: Approval of the -Minutes There was a motion by Sal Pace to approve the minutes of the April 16, 2008 meeting, second by Dick Scholten. The minutes were unanimously approved. Community Service Coordinator Report Carrier {match Program- The Community Service Coordinator (CSC) stated that the carrier watch program is still adding registrants. The Post Office has made several calls to the Department regarding missed mail. After checking the contact information, the Department found the residents to be well. The CSC will be working with Information Systems personnel to place all Carrier Watch Program information into a database that can be accessed quickly, and also be used by the Police and Fire Departments. Chairman Christie asked how many seniors are now enrolled? The CSC estimated around 35 to 40, with 3 new seniors registering that week. Treasure's Galore (Garage Sale)-Plans for Treasure's Galore continue to move along. The CSC has received 17 applications to sell at the event. Most applicants received information on the event from the Villager (newsletter) article. Additional information will be provided on Channel 6. Promotional flyers were distributed to the Board. Food Pantry Assistance- Requests for food assistance are higher than usual. Families of or 6 receiving food stamps can use the food pantry every other week. If families qualify they are not turned down for assistance. At this time the food pantry has adequate inventory of food items for distribution. Financial Assistance-March Salvation Armv Elk Grove Housing Fund 11 families assisted- S1,779.93 9 families assisted- 5826.63 Food Pantry 47 families assisted Anti-Smoking Campaign Smoking Cessation- The second smoking cessation class will be completed in early May. The next class is scheduled to begin in September. Smoke Free Elk Grove will have an informational booth at the Relay for Life, cancer fundraiser at Elk Grove High School on June 6`h. Pencils, buttons, pens, and key chains with an anti-smoking theme will be handed out to participants. Department Director's Report Radon- The Cook County Department of Environmental Control is providing free radon tests to Cook County residents. The program is being funded by the State of Illinois. Residents may call the county for a free radon test kit at (708) 565-6177. Because Of the soils in northern Illinois radon is not a serious problem in most homes. The best time to test for radon is the cooler/colder time of the year when the home is closed. Nest Nile Virus (WNV)- May I" begins the season for Nest Nile virus. The county will be accepting birds for testing again this year. The Department will also be submitting dead bird reports to the Northwest wiosquito Abatement District. Weather plays an important part in Nest Nile virus activity. During cool, wet summers WNW cases drop. During hot, relatively dry summers NST activity increases. Only time will tell. Blood Drive- 46 pints of blood were donated at the April 26`h blood drive. The next blood drive will be held on August 2, 2005. Pharmaceutical Stockpile Distribution Exercise- The Cook County Department of Public Health put on a pharmaceutical stockpile distribution exercise on May 131h at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Agencies from all over the northwest suburbs were represented. Department personnel played an active part in the exercise. This was a test to determine the effectiveness of the County and local governments to distribute medications to the mass public during a biological emergency or pandemic flu outbreak. Earth Day Event- The Earth Day event sponsored by the Elk Grove Park District was welt attended. The Department recycled medications and pharmaceuticals, sharps, and cell phones, as well as compact fluorescent bulbs. The Park District recycled old athletic shoes, plastic grocery bags and computers and electronics. People were also on hand to provide "Green" alternatives. Computer & Electronic Recycling- The Village has a company located in the Business Park that collects a variety of electronic and computer items, along with white goods, office and video entertainment equipment. The company, ARC I.nternational Corporation, is located at 880 Mark Street. They are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The infonnation will be placed in the next newsletter. Department Events & Activities- The Director provided the Board with an updated list of activities, events, and clinics hosted or performed by the Department. Environmental Health Inspector's Report-May April Activities Report Routine Inspections 65 Misc. Activities 290 Complaints 76 Citations 7 TOTAL 438 Trustee Czamik asked what food establishment score would necessitate the reinspection of that facility. The Director stated that the score is not as important as the type of violations noted by the inspector. Normally scores in the upper 80's or 90's do not require a reinspection. Jimmy John's is open as of May 13th The Department intern started on May 20th Community Health Nurse Report-May April Activities Report Blood Pressure Screening 51 Blood Sugar Screenings 3 Home/Site Visits 52 Office Visit 1 Consultations (Office/Employee) 2 Blood Drive 46 Day Care Inspections 2 TB Screening 13 1,Iisc. 8 Flu Shots 0 Site Visit 0 Unhygienic Home 0 Immiuiization Children (including flu shots) 21 Shots (43 total) TOTAL 199 Trustee Liaison Report- The Farmers Market is scheduled to open on June 4th and will nm until the end of September. The State of Illinois provided a grant to the Park District. The monies will be used to purchase reusable grocery bags. Rotary Fest will take place from June 1 lth through the 151h. The Village Parade will be held _ on June 14th. The theme is "Life is a Game". The Park District is building bocce courts at the Hattendorf Center. The Sister City group provided monies for construction. On Saturday, May 24`h the Park District will dedicate a tree to Frank Czarnik at March Park. The CSC stated there could be interest in a tree dedication program by Village residents. Old Business-None New Business- The Board needs vote to cancel the July meeting in June. Dick Scholten made a motion to adjourn the meeting; it was seconded by Sal Pace.
