Department Director's Report
Summer Intern- The Director introduced Frank Sowa, the Department intern. Frank
finished his degree in public health with a minor in environmental health from Northern
Illinois University. Frank needs 300+hours of fieldwork to graduate. He will be looking
for a job in the environmental health field once his internship is completed. The Director
stated that interns perform a number of activities for the Department. Interns usually
respond to nuisance and grass complaints, inspect risk one (1) food establishments and
public pools, and complete a Department project
West Nile Virus (WNV)- West Nile virus continues to be found in Illinois, but on a
slower pace than the last several years. Only three mosquito batches have been found
through mid-June, one recently in Evanston. No human cases have yet to be reported.
On June 12`h the Department submitted a dead bird to the State for testing.
Recalls- The Director stated that food and drug recalls occur quite frequently. The
Department receives an average of 1-2 per week. The recalls run the gamut from
salmonella tainted tomatoes, to E-coli in meat products, to recalled drugs or medical
equipment.
If the Department determines that a recall effects a local establishment, the business is sent
a fax or E-mail notifying them that they must remove the item(s) from sale. The
Department receives notice of recall from the FDA, USDA, and State and County Health
Departments.
The Director is working with IT Department to install an automatic fax program that will
be able to send out recall notices more quickly and efficiently.
Salmonella Outbreak in Raw Tomatoes- The Director provided an overview of the
current nationwide recall of tomatoes issued by the FDA. There have been over 220
reported cases of a rare type of salmonella (Salmonella saintpaul) nationwide, including
Illinois. Raw red plum, red Roma, and round red tomatoes appear to be the cause of the
outbreak. Consumers are urged to return any of the above tomatoes back to the point of
purchase.
Rabid Bats on the Rise- The State of Illinois is experiencing a rise in the number of rabid
bats being reported. In 2007, 113 rabid bats were found in the State. There were only 46 in
2006. So far this year 15 bats have been found be rabid.
The State is not sure why there is an increase in recent years. It could be due to better
reporting and an increased awareness by citizens.
People cannot tell by appearance if a bat is rabid. Bats observed out during daylight hours
should be avoided.
Computer and Electronic Reevclin2-
There is local business that accepts computers and other electronic items for recycling.
ARC International on Mark Street will accept items brought in by residents for no charge.
Residents can call (630) 412-8007 for details. The Director will put this information in the
next newsletter.
Department Events & Activities-The Director provided the Board with an updated list of
activities, events, and clinics hosted or performed by the Department.
