Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM.
Action Items: Approval of the Minutes
There was a motion by Sal Pace, to approve the minutes of the November 19, 2008
meeting, second by Trustee Nancy Czarnik. The minutes were unanimously approved.
Community Service Coordinator Report
Thanksgiving Adopt-A-Family- Meals for the Thanksgiving Adopt-A-Family were
handled through the Elk Grove Food Pantry. Food pantry families were provided with the
holiday meals during the regular food pantry Thursday distribution. Major components of
the holiday meal (turkeys, pies, etc.) were solicited from community donors and local
organizations. 65 families were serviced on November 20`h
Christmas Adopt-A-Family- The Christmas-Adopt-A-Family provided gifts and meals for
26 families. A local corporation had offered to provide 35 food baskets, but the offer was
retracted just before the distribution date.
The Happy Memories Holiday Party hosted 15 families for Christmas. Michael Caley, the
owner of Midaco Corporation has provided families with a holiday meal and gifts for
many years.
Food Pantry- Due to the increasing number of families using the food pantry the
Coordinator has begun recertifying families for the new year. Families must provide
personal information to determine if they qualify. Because of the increase in families using
the food pantry, families will continue be limited to 2x per month. Donations are still
coming into the food pantry.
Miscellaneous- The Coordinator has been providing clients with pharmaceutical
assistance. The Coordinator is planning to hold the Village Garage Sale again this summer.
The home rehabilitation program will start up again in May. The Coordinator met with
Environmental Health Inspector Kristen Gonsur to discuss Department protocol for dealing
with unsanitary (trash) homes.

The CSC continues to see new clients every week seeking help with utility bills and food
subsides.
Anti-Smoking Campaign
SmokinIZ Education- The Positive Youth Development Program staff members from
Kenneth Young Center will be providing T.A.T.U. training for Elk Grove High School
students in February or March. Training will take place at the high school during regular
class time instead of a one-day training at Village Hall.
Smoking Cessation- The next round of smoking cessation classes is scheduled for January
26, 2009. At this point only two people have signed up to attend.
Dick Scholten asked if the Director could determine success rate for quitting. The Director
could not be sure, but probably could provide information on how many completed the
course. Lois Colaprete asked about the July concert series. The Director stated that
smoking information and literature would be provided to people attending the concerts. .
Dick Scholten asked if more programming could be done with the elementary and junior
high students. Suggestions included awards (sweat/t-shirts, jackets, gift cards) for essay
contests or PSAs for Channel 6. Chairman Christie stated these ideas will be presented to
the Smoke Free Elk Grove Committee.
Department Director's Report
Winter Intern- For the first time the Village has taken on a winter intern. Ryan Gapsis
started with the Department on January 6`h. Ryan is finishing up his studies at Northern
Illinois University. A majority of his time will be spent conducting risk one food
inspections and responding to complaints. We will also provide him exposure to other
environmental health programs and activities. Ryan is working pro bono.
Foreclosure Trackinp,- The Department has signed a contract with Realty Trac Inc. to
provide the department with up-to-date property foreclosure information. The information
will be placed in an Access database that will be updated monthly.
Rain Barrels- As of last week the Village has received almost 350 requests for rain
barrels. Trustee Franke has extended the deadline for requests until the end of January. A
decision will be made on which vendor has the best product and pricing. The Village will
then decide if ordering in bulk will provide a substantial savings for residents.
"No Idlinj4" Contest- The Department has not received an outpouring of responses as
expected to the "No Idling" Logo/Slogan Contest. The Director will reestablish contact
with the school officials, and extend the deadline to hopefully get additional submittals.
Animal Rabies Clinic- The Village has an opportunity to host an animal rabies and
microchip clinic this summer. The Cook County Department of Animal & Rabies Control
funds the clinic. The clinic is scheduled to be held on a Wednesday in June or July
(hopefully 7/8/09) in conjunction with the Farmer's Market. Clinics run from 10:OOAM to
3:OOPM and are open to all Cook County residents. A rabies shot is $7.00 for one year,
$21.00 for three years. A microchip is $10.00.
Compendium- The Director and Community Services Coordinator are currently working
on the 2008 Compendium. The Director should have a copy for the Board to review at the
February meeting.
Document Destruction Event- The Village has been placed on a SWANCC list to host a
Document Destruction Event this spring or summer.
2008 Flu Clinics- The final tally for influenza shots was:
Employees- 126
Residents- 523
Homebound- 28
Total 677 .
The Department will be-placing an order for flu vaccine for the 2009-2010 season next
month. The Department will also be ordering vaccine for the Library.
Dr. Kelly stated that flu could occur in late winter or early spring, that is why the Director
advised to get flu shots later than earlier.
Sal Pace asked if flu shots could be provided to the homeless (PADS). The Director stated
that someone would need to administer the vaccine and there could be liability issues.
Trustee Czarnik suggested the exploring the issue with the church. The Director will
explore the queries by the Board.
Blood Drive- The Community Blood Drive was held on November Vt. Thirty-seven (37)
people donated blood. The next blood drive will be held on January 24, 2009.
Covote Si htinjzs- The Department has been getting increasing calls regarding coyote
sightings around the Village. A number of sightings have occurred along a narrow band of
land that extends south from Biesner and Biesterfield to Devon and Park Blvd. The
Department is working with an animal control specialist to lessen the probability that
aggressive coyotes will cross paths with residents or their pets.
Emplovee Wellness Program- The Employee Wellness Program sponsored a "Maintain
No Gain" contest for employees. Employees were asked to weigh in before and after the
holidays. Employees that maintained their weight through the holidays were rewarded for
their effort. One male and one female employee were eligible for a grand prize award.
Department Events R Activities- The Director provided the Board members with an
updated schedule of up coming events and regularly scheduled programs.

Trustee Liaison Report- The Village Board meetings can now be accessed on the
Internet. The Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce will host a wine and beer tasting on March
5`h. The Village Parade will be held on June 20`h. This year's theme is A Salute To A Star
Spangled Banner.
