Call to Order
Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM.
Action Items: Approval of the Minutes
There was a motion by Sal Pace, to approve the minutes of the April 15, 2009 meeting,
second by Dick Scholten.
Anti-Smoking Campaign
Smoking Cessation- No new smoking cessation sessions have been scheduled at this time.
Summer Concert Series- Smoke Free Elk Grove will be sponsoring a summer concert
series. Concerts will be offered on the Village Green every Tuesday at 7:30 PM during the
month of July. Smoke Free Elk Grove will have an information table at the concerts.
Department Director's Report
Pep, & Tonv Valillo Honored- May 12, 2009 was proclaimed "Tony & Peg Valillo Day"
by the Mayor and Village Board at the May 12`h Village Board meeting. Tony and Peg
were honored for their many years of volunteering in the Village. They were always
available to help at Department events. Mary Paliganoff asked about the Valillos'. The
Community Services Coordinator (CSC) stated they will be moving to a retirement
community in Macomb, IL.
Swine Flu Report- Sal Pace asked if the Department received information regarding a
swine flu case of a student at Elk Grove High School. The Chairman stated that there are
notification procedures in place when a confirmed outbreak is reported. Illnesses are
reported to the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) and Illinois
Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Household Hazardous Waste- The household hazardous waste event sponsored by the
TEPA and MWRD and hosted by Elk Grove Village was held on Saturday, May 91h at Elk
Grove High School. Approximately 1,600 cars, representing 2,000 households were
serviced at the event.
Rain Barrels- The Department has begun to contact residents who signed up for the rain
barrel program. All residents that completed the survey will be contacted first.
The rain barrels will cost $50.00+tax. The Village will provide a subsidy of $14.00/rain
barrel out of the Recycling Fund. Residents will be able to purchase up to two rain barrels.
Steiner Electric a local company is supplying the rain barrels.
At the May 12`h Village Board meeting an amendment was passed to prohibit rain barrels
from being located in the front yard of properties in the Village. Rain barrels can only be
located in the side and rear yards.
Idlinp, Education ProjZram- The winning artwork has been selected. The top three
students will be awarded gift certificates at the June 16`h Village Board meeting.
Medication Drop-Off- The medication drop-off program is up and running again. All
medication pickups were on hold until SWANCC and the DEA could come to an
agreement on certain medications. The DEA wanted to make sure that any controlled
medications were being handled and disposed of properly. The Village will not be able to
accept any controlled pharmaceuticals, those will be returned to the residents. It will be
responsibility of the residents to discard them in a proper manner. Sharps will continue to
be accepted for disposal.
Blood Drive- The next blood drive will be held on August 1, 2009.
Foreclosed Properties- On May 20`h the Village Board passed an amendment to the
Nuisance Ordinance to address foreclosed homes. The change will allow speedier
remediation of foreclosed (vacant) homes. The amendment adds an administrative fee to
cover the extra Village services needed to monitor and process foreclosed homes.
Department Events & Activities- The Director provided a list of upcoming and ongoing
Department events and activities.
'Community Service Coordinator Report
Volunteer of the Year- Eileen McWherter and Joseph Schluep were both chosen for the
"Volunteer of the Year" award. The CSC thanked the Board members that participated in
choosing the award recipients.
Rebuilding TolZether- The CSC has been busy with Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding
Together workday was held on May 2nd. A number of homeowners in the area were
provided with repairs and work on their homes.
Paint-A-Thon- The Paint-A-Thou is scheduled for September 12`h.
Salvation Armv- The new fiscal year budget will be coming in July. The CSC is hoping
that the Salvation Army will provide the same funding as last year, which was $11,000.00.
Approximately $1,100.00 is left in this year's budget. A new program offers $150.00 extra
for people that are unemployed and that can show documentation.
Dr. Kelly asked about the Christmas Kettle Drive and how much the Salvation Army
collected. The Department has not participated in the drive the last few years because of
logistics involved in the new construction of the Village Complex. The Department may
participate again this year.
Food Pantrv- The Postal Carrier Food Drive was successful. It replenished the food
pantries stock.
HousinjZ Fund- The CSC stated that the housing fund is low but monies are still available.

Environmental update: Trustee Czarnik asked if the summer intern had started. The CSC
stated the summer intern had started with the Department.

Trustee Liaison Report-
• The summer concert series starts July 7`n and continues on every Tuesday in July.
• The Farmer's Market is set to open on June 6`n. ABMC will be providing a health
screening at one of the dates. The Cook County Animal & Rabies Control
Department rabies and microchip clinic is scheduled for July 81n
• The Village's new holiday banners are now installed
• The Village Parade will be held on June 20`n. This year's theme is "A Salute to the
Star Spangled Banner"
• The Memorial Day services are on Monday, May 25`n at 10:45 AM.
Old Business- None
New Business- The CSC suggested that the Village provide recognition for all volunteers
on an annual basis. A number of other communities honor their volunteers and the CSC
wondered if Elk Grove Village might do the same. The CSC stated most volunteers are not
looking for recognition, but it would be appropriate to do something for them.
Chairman Christie asked that the Board continue to keep this proposal open for the future.
The Chairman also stated that determining how many volunteers would need to be
recognized is important.
Trustee Nancy Czarnik made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Jim
Morrill. Dr. Kelly. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 PM.
