The State of Health and Public Services in the State of Illinois- State Representative Mark Walker, 66` District, presented an overview of the current crisis in human services in Illinois. The state is currently looking at cutbacks in grants to public and private agencies of from 50%-75%. These cuts will affect programs that fund DCFS, the homeless, children with autism, and home services to the elderly to name a few. Closer to home the funding cuts will sharply affect the services provided by the Kenneth Young Center. Rep. Walker also spoke about a "Doomsday Budget" that was being considered. This budget would cut 1,500 state employees, cut funding to education, raise income taxes to 3%-4.5%. It could increase foreclosures and unemployment in the state by effecting small to medium businesses. Rep. Walker will be holding a number of town hall meetings in his district to discuss the current budget/funding crisis, as well as ethics and corruption issues, the establishment of free trade zones, and a modest income tax increase. Department Director's Report Swine Flu Report- At the last meeting Sal Pace asked about Department receiving and reporting information about the swine flu case in a student at Elk Grove High School (EGHS). All investigations and reporting of disease outbreaks are carried out by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) and/or Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The Department usually gets information from the CCDPH. The Department is not the lead agency because we are a non-certified health department. After finding out there was a swine flu case at EGHS the Director did speak to the principal of EGHS. The Director also contacted all the school districts that cover Elk Grove to ensure they had a proper reporting policy to parents and students and followed standard operating procedures in the event an outbreak occurred. At the meeting Sal Pace stated the Department should be the lead department when it comes to public health issues, and the Department should try to ensure that information is provided to the public on a timely basis. West Nile virus (WNV)- Spring rains can only mean the return of mosquitoes. So far this year the NWMAD is reporting low numbers of NWV mosquito larvae.
