Department Director's Report Swine Flu Report- The Department will be offering seasonal flu vaccine clinics again this year. There will be two clinics offered in November. The cost will be $20.00/shot, and the Department will bill Medicare. The seasonal flu shot is not affective on the novel H1N1 flu virus. Regarding the novel H1N1 (Swine) flu, the flu still continues to persist, causing continuing outbreaks and sporadic cases. Presently the Federal Government is working on a novel H1N1 vaccine (it is currently being tested). The Government hopes to have the vaccine available by mid October. The vaccine may have to be given in two doses. At this point the Government is concentrating on certain target groups in the initial thrust of their vaccine program. These target groups have been affected the most by the novel H1Nlvirus. Target groups include, pregnant women, school-aged children K-12 and school staff, children under 6 months of age an their parents and/or care givers, persons with chronic medical conditions, health care workers, and emergency services personnel. The Director has posted information on the novel H1N1 virus and seasonal virus on the website. Committee member Sal Pace stated that he has done a lot of research on the novel H1N1 virus and went on to praise the Director's efforts and hard work to keep the public informed, and that the information provided is as good as any website on the subject. The Chairman also gave kudos to the Director for providing credible information when there is so much misinformation being put out in the media. West Nile Virus (WNV)- West Nile Virus activity is low this season. The Northwest Mosquito Abatement District (NWMAD) is reporting low numbers of WNV carrying mosquitoes. They have been treating catch basins and have been adulticiding when weather permits. No human cases have been reported this season. Mary Paliganoff noted increased adulticiding trucks out this year. Grass and Weed Complaints- The unusual weather has caused a rash of grass and weed complaints this summer. The Department has received over 170 grass and weed complaints. The Department has also had a more difficult time getting compliance for grass and weed complaints. The Department has had the contractor cut over 40 properties this season. The Village pays the contractor and then places a lien on the property. The Director feels the increase in enforcement is due to a number of foreclosed/vacant properties in the Village. Animal Rabies and Microchip Clinic- The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control held a rabies vaccine and microchip clinic on July 8`h, during the Farmers Market. Along with the new legislation, some additional changes will take place. Manufactures of electronics will need to set up recycling venues to handle E-waste. Citizens will also need to have convenient sites in which to dispose of E-waste. SWANCC is looking into a number of options to collect and recycle E-waste. Some options would be having a "host" community collect E-waste on an on- going basis. A trailer would be provided to collect the E-waste. Villages could also opt to sponsor once-a-month collections at a chosen spot. SWANCC will be reviewing several options to determine the most viable recycling program(s).
