Action Items: Approval of the Minutes
There was a motion by Dr. John Kelly, to approve the minutes of the June 17, 2009 meeting,
second by Georgia Landt. The minutes were unanimously approved.
Anti-Smoking Campaign
SmokinIz Cessation- No new smoking cessation sessions have been scheduled at this time.
Summer Concert Series- Smoke Free Elk Grove Summer Concert series was held on the four
Tuesdays in July. The concerts were well received by the residents. The Department handed out
information on smoking and smoking cessation. The Positive Youth Development Program of
the Kenneth Young Center assisted at the information table.
Department Director's Report
Swine Flu Report- The Department will be offering seasonal flu vaccine clinics again this year.
There will be two clinics offered in November. The cost will be $20.00/shot, and the Department
will bill Medicare. The seasonal flu shot is not affective on the novel H1N1 flu virus.
Regarding the novel H1N1 (Swine) flu, the flu still continues to persist, causing continuing
outbreaks and sporadic cases. Presently the Federal Government is working on a novel H1N1
vaccine (it is currently being tested). The Government hopes to have the vaccine available by
mid October. The vaccine may have to be given in two doses. At this point the Government is
concentrating on certain target groups in the initial thrust of their vaccine program. These target
groups have been affected the most by the novel H1Nlvirus. Target groups include, pregnant
women, school-aged children K-12 and school staff, children under 6 months of age an their
parents and/or care givers, persons with chronic medical conditions, health care workers, and
emergency services personnel.
The Director has posted information on the novel H1N1 virus and seasonal virus on the website.
Committee member Sal Pace stated that he has done a lot of research on the novel H1N1 virus
and went on to praise the Director's efforts and hard work to keep the public informed, and that
the information provided is as good as any website on the subject. The Chairman also gave
kudos to the Director for providing credible information when there is so much misinformation
being put out in the media.
West Nile Virus (WNV)- West Nile Virus activity is low this season. The Northwest Mosquito
Abatement District (NWMAD) is reporting low numbers of WNV carrying mosquitoes. They
have been treating catch basins and have been adulticiding when weather permits. No human
cases have been reported this season. Mary Paliganoff noted increased adulticiding trucks out
this year.
Grass and Weed Complaints- The unusual weather has caused a rash of grass and weed
complaints this summer. The Department has received over 170 grass and weed complaints. The
Department has also had a more difficult time getting compliance for grass and weed complaints.
The Department has had the contractor cut over 40 properties this season. The Village pays the
contractor and then places a lien on the property. The Director feels the increase in enforcement
is due to a number of foreclosed/vacant properties in the Village.
Animal Rabies and Microchip Clinic- The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies
Control held a rabies vaccine and microchip clinic on July 8`h, during the Farmers Market. Thirty
(30) one-year,-and eighty-six (86) three-year rabies vaccines were administered. Fourteen (14)
animals received microchips.
Rain Barrels- Residents continue to purchase rain barrels through the Village subsidized
program. About 160 rain barrels have been purchased.
Idling Education ProjZram- Three students from Mead Junior High School were presented with
plaques and gift cards for their top three selections in the "No Idling" slogan/logo contest. The
Department will work with High School students in the fall to design street signs.
Computer and Electronic Recyclin2- SWANCC is once again offering at home pick up of
computers and electronics. For $25.00 SWANCC will pick up a maximum of 6 items. Call
SWANCC or go to their website to schedule a pick up.
Starting January 1, 1012 the State of Illinois will ban all E-waste from landfills. Along with the
new legislation, some additional changes will take place. Manufactures of electronics will need
to set up recycling venues to handle E-waste. Citizens will also need to have convenient sites in
which to dispose of E-waste. SWANCC is looking into a number of options to collect and
recycle E-waste. Some options would be having a "host" community collect E-waste on an on-
going basis. A trailer would be provided to collect the E-waste. Villages could also opt to
sponsor once-a-month collections at a chosen spot. SWANCC will be reviewing several options
to determine the most viable recycling program(s).
Blood Drive- At the August 1, 2009 blood drive 37 people presented to donate. 36 pints were
collected with one deferral. The next clinic will be held on November 71h.
Document Destruction Event- The Document Destruction Event will be held on August 29,
2009 in the Village Hall Parking lot. The event will run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Department Events & Activities- The Director provided a list of upcoming and ongoing
Department events and activities.
Community Service Coordinator Report
Emerj4ency Preparedness- The Community Services Coordinator (CSC) continues to work on
the emergency sheltering aspect of the emergency action plan for the Village. The CSC will be
coordinating with the CERT members on the specifics of site locations. Cristus Victor has been
identified as a sheltering site.
School Supplies- Community Services distributed school supplies to the children of families that
utilize the food pantry. A number of generous donations were provided to Community services.

getting a car seat installed. ABMC and baby books recommended using the Police Department or
Fire Department. Neither Department provides that service (the Police Department did at one
time). Other communities in the area that do provide the service, did not allow non-residents to
participate.
Trustee Czamik motioned to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Jim Morrill. The meeting
was adjourned at 7:49 PM.
