Zoning Variation—Docket#17-3 171 Basswood Drive
Chairman Childress called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and read a statement describing the
hearing notification procedure as well as the legal notice.
The petitioner,Agha Ali, was sworn in and asked to present his case.
Mr. Ali stated that the current fence was existing when he bought the property fourteen(14)
years ago. The existing landscaping would be adversely affected if he had to relocate the fence to
a compliant location. Additionally,he mentioned that he would lose a substantial amount of
fenced in yard if the fence had to be relocated. The fence is deteriorating and replacing it would
be a benefit to the neighborhood.
Mr. Childress opened the meeting to questions from the board.
Mr. Dohrer stated that he had no issues with the proposed fence location because there were no
sight line concerns relative to the placement of fence and the adjacent neighbor's driveway.
Ms. De Frenza asked the petitioner what type of fence would be installed.
Mr. Ali stated that a six (6') foot high wood fence is proposed in the same location as the
existing fence.
Mr. Childress opened the meeting to questions from the public.
Steve Izumi, 171 Basswood Drive, asked the board what part of the fence needed a variation.
Mr. Childress informed Mr. Izumi that the north portion of the fence needed a variation due to its
present location.
A motion to grant a variation for the construction of a six (6') foot high, wood fence which
would extend approximately fifteen(15')feet beyond a line extended from nearest front corner
of the principal structure on the adjacent single family residential was made by Mr. Dohrer and
seconded by Mr. Meister. Upon voting(AYES—Childress, Kelley, Colgan, De Frenza,
Larson,Jameel and Bookler.) The motion to grant the variance passed unanimously.
Mr. Childress advised the petitioner,Mr.Ali,to contact the Village Clerk and attend the
subsequent Village Board Meeting. The meeting adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,

Re: ZBA Docket#17-3
171 Basswood Drive
Dear Honorable Mayor and Board of Trustees:
On July 6,2017 at 7:00 p.m.,Zoning Board of Appeals Chairman, Donald Childress called the
hearing to order. The petition was read as well as the mailing notice statement. Petitioner,Agha Ali,was
sworn in and asked to state his case for requesting a zoning variation.
Section 3-7:D.3 of the Zoning Ordinance prohibits fences from being constructed beyond a line
extended from the nearest front corner of the principal building located on an adjacent single-family
residential lot.
The petitioner is seeking a variation which would permit the replacement of an existing six(6')
foot high wood fence which would extend approximately fifteen(15') feet beyond the nearest front
corner of the principal building located on an adjacent single-family residential lot.The property seeking
the variation is located at 171 Basswood Drive, Elk Grove Village, Illinois.
The petitioner stated that they moved into the property fourteen (14)years ago and the fence
was existing at that time. The petitioner stated that existing landscaping would make it difficult to
relocate the fence without either removing or adversely affecting the landscaping around the fence and
the yard. The fence is deteriorated and in need of replacement. The petitioner feels that replacing the
fence, compared to repairing the fence, will help benefit the property and the surrounding
neighborhood.
The following questions and comments were brought up by the Commissioners:
1. The Commissioners inquired about the petitioners' hardship to support a variance which
was the fact that the house is on a corner lot with a small yard that needs to be protected by
a fence in the current location.
2. The Commissioners asked about site line problems and concluded that there were none.
3. The Commissioners inquired about the type of fence proposed to be installed and confirmed
that a six(6')foot high wood fence would be acceptable.
Public Comment:
1. Steve lzumi, 177 Basswood Drive, inquired about section of fence that needed the variation
and had no objections to the request for variation.
The chairman called for a motion.Mr. Dohrer made a motion to DO GRANT the variation for the
new fence which was seconded by Mr. Meister.A roll call was taken.
Vote to DO GRANT: De Frenza, Kelley, Childress, Colgan, Larson, lameel,Bookler
Vote to DO NOT GRANT: None
