Ryan Bookler Dr.John Kelly Nancy Czarnik, Trustee Georgia Landt Dick Scholten Staff Present Michael Cavallini, Health & Community Services Director Linda Blair, Community Services Coordinator Call to Order Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM. Action Items: Approval of the Minutes Sal Pace made a motion to approve the minutes from November 18, 2009. The motion was seconded by.Lois Colaprete. The minutes were unanimously approved. Community Service Coordinator Report Holiday Adopt-A- Family- Thanksgiving: Fifty-five (55) turkeys along with side dishes were handed out at Thanksgiving. Christmas: The Christmas Holiday Adopt-A-Family served 17 families this year. All the families adopted had children as family members. Forty-four (44) additional families were provided with gift cards for Wal-Mart and Jewel. As mentioned in November, the Midaco Company provided a substantial donation to the Christmas- Adopt-A-Family program. Several other donors also provided generous donations. Food Pantry- Because of many sizable donations to the Elk Grove Food Pantry they presently have ample supplies of food on hand. The shelves at the food pantry are full at this time. Client use remains high. Employee Christmas Lunch-The first annual Elk Grove Village Employee Christmas Lunch on December 18th was a great success. Because it was so well received, Linda and Marty are planning a summer lunch for employees this year. Salvation Army Elk Grove Housing Fund November- 0 November- 0 December- 8 families, $684.80 December- 2 families, $200.00 Food Pantry November - 63 families assisted December- 64 families assisted Anti-Smoking Campaign The Positive Youth Development Program (PYDP) a program of the Kenneth Young Center will be contacting the local grammar schools to develop an "All Stars Core" program. The "All Stars Core" program requires students to identify positive ideals and future aspirations. Positive peer norms are established through activities. Parents are also encouraged to participate. Summer Concert Series-The summer concert series sponsored by Smoke Free Elk Grove will take place again in July. Department Director's Report Flu Vaccine Update- The week of January 10-16 was National Influenza Vaccination Week. The Director stated that it was not too late to get a H1N1 or seasonal flu shot. H1N1 appears to be waning but cases are still being reported. There have been 2,696 cases and 86 deaths reported in Illinois. Most cases, about half are in the 0-24 year age group. H1N1 is readily available at Walgreen's, Dominick's and Jewel. The Director will be ordering flu vaccine for the 2010-2011 season. Food Service Newsletter- The Director included a copy of the current food service newsletter, The Healthy Elk. The newsletter is mailed to all food service establishments and contains current trends and information on food safety. Holiday Lights Recycling- The Department is accepting unwanted/unused holiday string lights and extension cords for recycling. Residents can bring in their lights to the Department Office until February 15tH E Waste- SWANCC has reevaluated its original program to provide E-Waste recycling to its member communities. The original program required communities to operate drop-off collections three days per week. Member communities felt with the current economic conditions and employee cut backs that program would place a lot of strain on the municipality funding and manpower. SWANCC is now looking at a number of options including; one day events and shared events by two or more communities. Elk Grove Village was one of four communities chosen to host an E-Waste program. Idling Education Program- The "No Idling' design contest will not start until January 2010. The contest will be open to the graphic design students at Elk Grove High School. Winning entries will be used on street signs in no idling zones throughout the Village. Blood Drive- A Community Blood Drive will be held on January 23, 2010. At the request of LifeSource the hours of the blood drive have been extended 30 minutes and now will run from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The drives are held in Rooms A/B/C in the Village Hall. Children's Immunization Program-The children's immunization clinics are now back at the Village Hall. Beginning in January all clinics will be held in the lower level of the Village Hall in Rooms A/B/C. The clinic will eventually move back to room E when construction is completed. Children's seasonal flu vaccine will be available at the January clinic. TB Clinics- Beginning January 1, 2010, the Department will no longer hold regularly scheduled TB clinics. TB vaccine will still be available to Police and Fire personnel if required by union agreements. Browns Chicken- Brown's Chicken filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The owner of the property originally stated he would reopen the restaurant under a new name, "Choo Choo's Chicken. The owner has now backed down from his original statement and might not reopen the business. The bankruptcy court may also allow Brown's Chicken to reopen. Department Events &Activities-The Director provided a list of upcoming and ongoing Department events and activities. Activities 602 Complaints 133 Citations 6 TOTAL 859 Fall Intern- The fall intern worked for the Department until December 4'h. He conducted a survey and inspection of all foreclosed properties. He also inspected all indoor swimming pools. New Business- Dr. Labinsky raised a question regarding blood sugar screening. The Director will have the Community nurse provide an explanation of the change in the blood sugar screening program for the next meeting. Dr. Labinsky motioned to adjourn the meeting.
