Philip Kennedy Nancy L. Eike Marge Mahoney Mary Paliganoff . . Dick Penley Barbara Pohn Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 8 : 14 p.m. by Harriet Dalaskey, Chairperson. After review of the minutes of the April meeting, it was moved and seconded to approve the minutes as corrected (on the top line of page 4 , the word volunteer should be in the plural) , and unanimously passed. Coordinator ' s Report: Given by Nancy Eike See copy of the coordinator ' s report, of April, 1988 . In addition to the items identified in the report, the following were presented. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit will be giving parenting classes, starting in the fall, at a cost of $10 . The Elk Grove Township Day Care Center is also beginning parenting classes in the fall. The staff believes that they will be able to refer several of the community service clients to these programs . On June 17 is an outing to a Cubs .game, tickets costing $15 . 00 . The purpose is to benefit the Kenneth W. Young Center for senior services . Three buses have been underwritten. and the tailgate party is sponsored by Anheuser Busch. Ms . Dalaskey is working on snacks for the event. Surveys for the Child Care Council have been sent out in an effort to learn what companies are offering in terms of dependent child care. Open House for the Village Hall is on Sunday, June 12 from 1 : 00 to 5 : 00 p.m. There have been many complaints regarding taxi service for seniors in Elk Grove Village; most especially the complaints have to do with taxis being late and rudeness on the part of the driver. If, on the other hand, a member of the staff of the Community Service O€fice .asks .for the cab to-go to a senior ' s home, the taxi arrives very promptly. Even i CSB Minutes Page two though the company provides the service at a reduced rate, is is otherwise subsidized by Elk Grove Village. However, seniors also tip much more lightly than ordinary business clients, hence the apparent disinclination of the cab driver to come as promptly and as readily as he would otherwise. After discussion, Mary Paliganoff moved and Marge seconded a motion to direct the staff to write a letter to the executive of the cab companies identifying the complaints, and sending a copy to the president of Elk Grove Village. COMMITTEE REPORTS Coordination of Service: Given by Barbara Pohn The most recent presentation was by a member of the staff of Addiction Recovery of Chicago (ARC) having to do with the adult children of alcoholics . About 20 people attended. No additional meetings are scheduled until September. Ms . Eike informed the Board that the 1988 handbook for senior citizens had just become available and will be distributed. Each member of the board received a copy of the handbook. Elk Grove Distance Classic: Given by Nancy Eike The reformated registration is being printed at the present time; an Elk Grove resident has been found to -print the T-shirts that will be distributed. The same finish line coordinator was hired as last year and will be required to remain until all awards have been distributed. Cost for the services went up. Intergenerational Ad Hoc Committee: Given by Dick Penley The District 214 Community Education Intergenerational committee is on the verge of receiving a substantial donation of between $5 , 000 and $10 , 000 . The benefactor is anonymous . The gift will be used to expand the program. For Paint Distribution - There are no houses owned by senior citizens for young persons to paint in Elk Grove Village; the closest thing to that requirement is a garage door. United Way Youth Leadership - Mr. Penley referred outstanding students for the program and they have already demonstrated spirit, enthusiasm and dedication. OLD BUSINESS : Snow Removal Ordinance: President Zettek has informed Ms . Eike that there is no ordinance on the books in Elk Grove Village requiring the removal of snow by residents ; in addition, it would be very CSB Minutes Page three difficult to enforce because of illness and frailty on the part of some owners . Furthermore, if an owner has shoveled his or her sidewalk and someone subsequently falls on it, that owner is more liable for the damages than he or she would be had the sidewalk not been shoveled in the first place. After discussion it was agreed that the chairperson would appoint an ad hoc safety for seniors committee which would be charged with developing an outline of the principal elements and possible solutions of the issues of safety for seniors in Elk Grove Village. The chair asked for a report at the next meeting of the board. Handicapped Bus Service: President Zettek informed Ms . Eike that there was a bus service for the Village Grove Apartments a number of years ago but that, because ridership was low, the service had been cancelled. He also indicated that a lift might not accommodate the needs of the frail elderly as the lift is used primarily for persons in wheelchairs . Hfter discussion, it was agreed that Ms . Dalaskey would communicate with officials in Schaumburg to learn how they provide their bus service for the elderly and will report to the board in June. Community Service By-Laws : Ms . Eike presented copies of the March 1984 version of the Community Service By-Laws for review by the By-Law committee- She pointed out that there is a question as to whether or not the By-Laws had ever been formally approved by the Board of Trustees of Elk Grove Village. Civil Defense Shelter Training: The Civil Defense Shelter Training Program is to begin at 6 : 30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 , 1988 ; Bill James is the trainer. Several members of the board have agreed to participate in the training. NEW BUSINESS: Organ Donation Program: Ms . Dalaskey noted that she would talk with State Senator Judy Baar Topinka regarding a proposed action of the legislature authorizing the drivers license for the state of Illinois being perceived as a valid authorization for donation of organs ; she will report on her progress at the next meeting of the board. Announcements : Ms . Guest thanked the Board for nominating her for the .recent honor she received in Evanston as an outstanding volunteer by the Area Agency on Aging. Nancy Eike and she both attended CSB Minutes Page four the awards ceremony. The next regular Community Service Board meeting will be held on Thursday, June 16 , 1988 at 8 : 00 p.m. in the Village Hall .
