Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 8 : 14 p.m. by Harriet
Dalaskey, Chairperson. After review of the minutes of the
April meeting, it was moved and seconded to approve the
minutes as corrected (on the top line of page 4 , the word
volunteer should be in the plural) , and unanimously passed.
Coordinator ' s Report: Given by Nancy Eike
See copy of the coordinator ' s report, of April, 1988 . In
addition to the items identified in the report, the following
were presented. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the
Holy Spirit will be giving parenting classes, starting in
the fall, at a cost of $10 . The Elk Grove Township Day
Care Center is also beginning parenting classes in the fall.
The staff believes that they will be able to refer several
of the community service clients to these programs . On
June 17 is an outing to a Cubs .game, tickets costing $15 . 00 .
The purpose is to benefit the Kenneth W. Young Center for
senior services . Three buses have been underwritten. and
the tailgate party is sponsored by Anheuser Busch. Ms .
Dalaskey is working on snacks for the event. Surveys for
the Child Care Council have been sent out in an effort to
learn what companies are offering in terms of dependent
child care.
Open House for the Village Hall is on Sunday, June 12 from
1 : 00 to 5 : 00 p.m.
There have been many complaints regarding taxi service for
seniors in Elk Grove Village; most especially the complaints
have to do with taxis being late and rudeness on the part
of the driver. If, on the other hand, a member of the staff
of the Community Service O€fice .asks .for the cab to-go
to a senior ' s home, the taxi arrives very promptly. Even

though the company provides the service at a reduced rate,
is is otherwise subsidized by Elk Grove Village. However,
seniors also tip much more lightly than ordinary business
clients, hence the apparent disinclination of the cab driver
to come as promptly and as readily as he would otherwise.
After discussion, Mary Paliganoff moved and Marge seconded
a motion to direct the staff to write a letter to the executive
of the cab companies identifying the complaints, and sending
a copy to the president of Elk Grove Village. The motion
passed 4 yes , 2 no' s .
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Coordination of Service: Given by Barbara Pohn
The most recent presentation was by a member of the staff
of Addiction Recovery of Chicago (ARC) having to do with
the adult children of alcoholics . About 20 people attended.
No additional meetings are scheduled until September.
Ms . Eike informed the Board that the 1988 handbook for senior
citizens had just become available and will be distributed.
Each member of the board received a copy of the handbook.
Elk Grove Distance Classic: Given by Nancy Eike
The reformated registration is being printed at the present
time; an Elk Grove resident has been found to -print the
T-shirts that will be distributed. The same finish line
coordinator was hired as last year and will be required
to remain until all awards have been distributed. Cost
for the services went up.
Intergenerational Ad Hoc Committee: Given by Dick Penley
The District 214 Community Education Intergenerational committee
is on the verge of receiving a substantial donation of between
$5 , 000 and $10 , 000 . The benefactor is anonymous . The gift
will be used to expand the program.
For Paint Distribution - There are no houses owned by senior
citizens for young persons to paint in Elk Grove Village;
the closest thing to that requirement is a garage door.
United Way Youth Leadership - Mr. Penley referred outstanding
students for the program and they have already demonstrated
spirit, enthusiasm and dedication.
OLD BUSINESS :
Snow Removal Ordinance:
President Zettek has informed Ms . Eike that there is no
ordinance on the books in Elk Grove Village requiring the
removal of snow by residents ; in addition, it would be very

difficult to enforce because of illness and frailty on the
part of some owners . Furthermore, if an owner has shoveled
his or her sidewalk and someone subsequently falls on it,
that owner is more liable for the damages than he or she
would be had the sidewalk not been shoveled in the first
place. After discussion it was agreed that the chairperson
would appoint an ad hoc safety for seniors committee which
would be charged with developing an outline of the principal
elements and possible solutions of the issues of safety
for seniors in Elk Grove Village. The chair asked for a
report at the next meeting of the board.
Handicapped Bus Service:
President Zettek informed Ms . Eike that there was a bus
service for the Village Grove Apartments a number of years
ago but that, because ridership was low, the service had
been cancelled. He also indicated that a lift might not
accommodate the needs of the frail elderly as the lift is
used primarily for persons in wheelchairs . Hfter discussion,
it was agreed that Ms . Dalaskey would communicate with officials
in Schaumburg to learn how they provide their bus service
for the elderly and will report to the board in June.
Community Service By-Laws :
Ms . Eike presented copies of the March 1984 version of the
Community Service By-Laws for review by the By-Law committee-
She pointed out that there is a question as to whether or
not the By-Laws had ever been formally approved by the Board
of Trustees of Elk Grove Village.
Civil Defense Shelter Training:
The Civil Defense Shelter Training Program is to begin at
6 : 30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 , 1988 ; Bill James is the trainer.
Several members of the board have agreed to participate
in the training.
NEW BUSINESS:
Organ Donation Program:
Ms . Dalaskey noted that she would talk with State Senator
Judy Baar Topinka regarding a proposed action of the legislature
authorizing the drivers license for the state of Illinois
being perceived as a valid authorization for donation of
organs ; she will report on her progress at the next meeting
of the board.
Announcements :
Ms . Guest thanked the Board for nominating her for the .recent
honor she received in Evanston as an outstanding volunteer
by the Area Agency on Aging. Nancy Eike and she both attended
