HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 10/15/1987 - MEETING MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, October 15, 1987 Elk Grove Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Ruth Guest Harriet Dalaskey Marge Mahoney Dennis Gallitano Mary Paliganoff Jane Goldsmith Dick Penley Ray Gunn Bro. Philip Kennedy Randy Melind Barbara Pohn Barbara Rettberg Staff: Nancy Eike Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 8: 10 p.m. by Mary Paliganoff. Minutes were tabled until next meeting when a quorum is present. Coordinator's Report: Given by Nancy Eike Discussion ensued on the purchasing of Community Service brochures, senior citizen handbooks and Y.E.S. .bookmarks. Money is budgeted for Community Service brochures so 2000 will be ordered from Kukla Press. The cost for- , ' � the senior citizen handbooks is $482.00 for 500. Questions were raised as to whether these books would be covered under the flood. Mary suggested that Nancy look into it and also revise the booklet. Dick said that if funds were not available with this years budget that it should be put in next years. Nancy met with Pat McHale and Gary Kenzer from the Community Nutrition Network regarding a hot meal program for seniors in Elk Grove Village.- .This was done at Grant Wood two years ago and served 50 or more people but had minor problems. Now the bugs have been worked out and the program is under the direction of CEDA. We are working on locatinga site for this program other than Grant Wood, and will also be asking the township for help with transportation. FISH, is having an open house at the Village Hall Court Room on October 20th at 7 p.m. The meeting is being held to discuss the future of FISH. If an interest is not shown, and additional volunteers are not recruited the group will have to disband. Comments were that many of the women who used to volunteer are now working, is there a need for this program, would the responsibility for addressing emergency services of this nature then be put on Community Service, etc. Any input on this would be appreciated. The Volunteer Center, formally the Volunteer Service 'Bureau has asked if I would be on their Board. The Volunteer Center matches volunteer skills with community needs. Nancy is meeting with the Director to discuss what the time commitment and responsibilities would be. Dick CSB Minutes Page two f- - suggested that I write up a chart showing where my time is spent to determine if I would be over extending myself. I will have that ready for the next meeting. The Food Distribution Project is going well at Forest View High School. I am processing applications for .Elk Grove residents and that is working well. I also help out on distribution day. Community Service received 144 calls in September and 146 requests. 77 were for agency information, mostly concerning the Elk Grove Distance Classic, 21 were financial, 9 volunteer, 8 health services, 6 aged, 6 child care, .6 counseling, etc. Friday I will be filming a public service announcement for United Way of Elk Grove, Inc. We are filming a young blind women who volunteers at Talkline/Kidsline. Channel 6 is doing this free. Coordination of Service: Given by Nancy Eike Meeting on next Wednesday at the Leisure Fitness Centre. Topic "Dealing with the Emotion of Jealousy". Elk Grove Distance Classic: Given by Nancy Eike The estimated budget report was discussed. Profit- should be somewhere around $3,500. Requests for funds from the EGDC are st-ill coming in. Marge• suggested the possibility: of setting up a scholarship or- trip fund for kids who cannot afford .to go on Park District trips. If their are funds left Dick said we might .have- Carl VanGundy -from the Park District manage the trip- fund. More will be decided next time. In regards to the future of the race this will be brought up at the next meeting. The basic consensus was to go a-head as usual. Intergenerational Ad Hoc: Given by Dick Penley Kids set up for entire school year for breakfasts at Grant Wood and for assisting at Valentine's Day Party. Old Business: Paint Distribution Project - Rotary donated $250 but paint will not be given out until spring. Dick had set up a crew from the high school to paint a seniors house but no home is available now according to Bob Ray from the Health Department. New Business: Any one interested in attending the "AIDS in the Workplace" workshop at Alexian Brothers Medical Center must notify Community Service by October 27th. Nancy wondered if the Board would be interested in d6ing a Board project such as a Wellness night for Parents and Kids. Many Board members may CSB Minutes Page three not have time for this type of involvement but it will be discussed later. Announcements: Ruth Guest and other concerned citizens are addressing the issue of a saft crosswalk for the seniors to get to the new Jewel.
