Philip Kennedy Ray Gunn Marge Mahoney Randy Melind Staff : Mary Paliganoff Nancy Eike Dick Penley Barbara Pohn Barbara Rettberg Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 8 : 03 p.m. Dick Penley motioned to approve the minutes. Marge Mahoney seconded it. Motion carried. Coordinator ' s Report: Given by Nancy Eike Doug Collins and John Paxson from the Bulls spoke at Elk Grove High School on "Saying No To Drugs" . One thousand kids attended. Got a very positive response. Elk Grove Village Community Service received the Golden Kettle Award for the second year in a row. Salvation Army wants to present the award for this at the Community Service Board meeting in March. Paint Project - Dick Penley suggested that the Intergenerational Project might be a possibility to get private companies to donate paint, etc. He will contact companies in this regard . Board members discussed various ways to get supplies for the Paint Project. One was for Nancy to contact service clubs for donations . Agency of the Month - Cook County Sheriff ' s Youth Department. Coordination of Service: Given by Barbara Pohn .Suzan Moe Ross spoke on Co-Dependency and was very well. received . Almost 30 people attended. Budget Committee : Nancy said the budget will be presented to the Board on Monday, February 23rd. Nancy feels the quality of Youth Employment Service needs to be improved. Can be more responsible for the referrals made by interviewing kids. There have been numerous complaints about Y.E.S. kids on the part of prospective employers . The Community Service Board is supportive of Nancy interviewing prospective Y.E. S. kids . However, Village management says that would be getting more into provision of services and should be just a referral service. I CSB Minutes Page two Barbara Pohn suggested Nancy contact Mike deZonna at Youth Services of Elk Grove Township to see if they would like to takeover the Y.E. S. program. Nancy requested the clerk/receptionist position be upgraded to secretary. May be brought up at budget meeting. Intergenerational Ad/Hoc Committee : Given by Dick Penley The program is getting spectacularly off the ground. The Seniors High School Home Economics Class at EGHS prepared bi-monthly breakfasts for seniors. The Seniors High School Horticulture Club came over and taught flower arranging. Dick said the seniors and students got along very well. Sheila Ray asked that a flower arranging class be taught by students because the seniors loved it so much. District 214 has given the okay to do this. Seniors complained about rip offs in car repairs . Seniors can now bring their cars in for a second opinion at Elk Grove High School Auto Mechanics twice a month. If Seniors do need service, they can pay for the parts only or pay $5. 00 for labor. The seniors are also interested in ceramics and $600-700 worth of greenware was donated for firing. The school is working on getting a student to teach a ceramics class. The Seniors need help with seedlings for Arbor Day and have asked .the high school students for help. The Board was thrilled to hear about Dick' s fantastic efforts in coordinating. Dick is planning some good public, relations . Elk Grove Distance Classic: Given by Barbara Pohn The Planning Committee does not have a representative from the Hospital. Our former representative terminated her position. Nancy contacted Br. Kennedy and he said the hospital is still very interested in co-sponsoring the race and will be assigning someone to represent the hospital at future committee meetings. Harriet Dalaskey would like to attend the next meeting. Board Members Recommendations : Harriet Dalaskey suggested a parent from District 54 . Other suggestions were made. The Board wants to try and get a teacher from Conant who lives west of 53 . Then the recommendations will be given to Mr. Zettek. There is no urgency on this but Ray will try to get some suggestions for members by the next meeting. Government Surplus Food Distribution Program: Given by Nancy Eike Dennis Gallitano feels that the program should be implemented and he brought this up to the Trustees. The Trustees raised many issues on who would be eligible (residents only) , space needed, staff time, etc. The Trustees indicated they felt Community Service should not coordinate it as CSB Minutes Page three Community Service is for referral/information. Dennis advised that we write Elk Grove Township in this regard and ask if they would be interested in implementing the program. It was mentioned that Nancy Vanderwheel would be a good contact as she is on the Township Board. Nancy Eike will be calling her and then will direct a letter to the Township. Nancy visited the CEDA program during delivery and distribution. It takes 3 staff days a month for the supervisor with the aid of 2 other individuals . Nancy was advised that food distribution should be to the entire Elk Grove Township rather than just the Village. Volunteer Recognition Board: An ad hoc committee needs to be formed. These board members will be on it: Barbara Rettberg, Ruth Guest, and Dick Penley, Harriet Dalaskey as alternate . Election of Board Members : Marge motioned the following slate of officers be approved. Ray Gunn, President Mary Paliganoff , Vice President Harriet Dalaskey, Secretary Randy seconded it. Motion carried. Organ Donor Program: Given by Harriet Dalaskey Report is attached. New Business : It was noted that three schemes were designed regarding the floor plan for the existing village building. Scheme 1 & 2 moved Community Service and Social Service Section upstairs and were more costly. Scheme 3 is that Community Service and Social Service Section were to remain where they are . Everyone expressed concern over scheme 3 and wanted to be notified of further news in this area. Ruth Guest is concerned about Seniors getting to the new shopping center. Harriet commented about traffic flow at Tonne and Landmeier and wants to ask the Village for a light. Adjournment: Dick motioned to adjourn. Ruth seconded it. Motion carried. Spoke with Principal and was referred to the PTO President. He said that he'd have her callme. Clearmont: Spoke with Principal and was referred to the PTO President. She will put me on the agenda for 4/2 , but if the speaker for the 3/5 meeting cancels, she'll call me. Link: I called the Principal and am waitingfor a return call. Ruply: I called the Principal and am waiting for a return call. Salt Creek: I called the Principal. He's out of town until 2/24 and I left word for him to call back. I was also referred to the PTO President and have been unable to talk to her yet. Stevenson: I called the Principal and am waiting for a return call. Grove Jr. High: I called the Principal and was referred to the PTO President. She will call me when she wants me to make a presentation. Mead Jr. High: I called the Principal and will speak to teachers and department heads at a meeting on 3/5. Also referred to the PTO President. She will talk wo the other board members and if they want me to make a presentation, she'll call me. Lively Jr. High: No longer functions as a school. I called the Library to check on their supply of forms. I was told to call back tomorrow. I plan to follow up with all the. schools and any other organization or church and business that will allow me to. make a presentation. Harriet B.
