Roger Schindel Ray Gunn Marge Mahoney Staff : Randy Melind Nancy Eike Mary Paliganoff Dick Penley Barbara Pohn Guests : Nancy Yiannias, 'Coordinator Health Department Bob Ray, Housing Health Inspector, Health Department Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 8 : 05 p.m. Dick Penley motioned to approve the minutes from October ' s meeting. Randy Melind seconded. Motion carried. Ray Gunn welcomed Nancy to Community Services. Nancy Yiannias and Bob Ray talked about the paint distribution project. There is a housing and maintenance code. Painting .the exterior is part of the code. Bob talked to a program in Texas about the paint project which suggested the Health Department work with a community service program. Bob asked DeSoto for supplies but .they did not want to donate directly to the Health Department. DeSoto may be willing to work with Community Service. The Health Department found 5 or 6 houses in the community in need of this help as -these families are having financial difficulties . Ray said he would work with Nancy to write a letter to DeSoto on behalf of the Community Service Board for paint and supplies. Randy is going to give Nancy the name of another distributor. Dick Penley has the kids lined up to work on doing the painting through the Elk Grove High School. Liability insurance is through umbrella coverage of District 214 . Bob Ray feels that most of the recipients will be able to paint their home along with the teens help. Mary Pali anoff suggested Eagle Scouts might be helpful for this as well do it as a project. The winter months will give Community Service the chance to get supplies as the project will have to wait until CSB Minutes Page two the weather is better . Coordinator' s Report : Given by Nancy Eike United Way Needs Assessment was completed. The top 5 indicated needs by residents were : 1 . Adolescent Drug/Alcohol Abuse Services 2 . Ill/Disabled Residents Home Health Care 3 . Child Abuse Services 4 . Drug/Alcohol Education 5. Sexual Abuse Services Currently United Way agencies address these priorities but the community is very concerned about drug/alcohol prevention. Nancy said she will try to get Doug Collins, Chicago Bulls Coach, to come talk to the schools on "Saying No to Drugs" . Mary suggested he speak to the Junior Highs. The consensus was to try that first. Needs assessment by the agencies indicated needs as : 1. Energy Assistance - housing. 2 . Day Care - after school care - Nancy is joining Latchkey Task Force to address this. 3 . Child Abuse and Sexual Abuse services . 4 . Financial Aid - child support. 5 . Single Parent Services - to help with this Nancy is going to try and get Big Brothers/Big Sisters more involved in the community and will look at other means. Nancy attended Elder Abuse Project Consortium and is joining task force to publicize the .services and lobby for legislation. Nancy would also like to be on the United Way Board and is attending next United Way Board meeting. Community Service Board agreed this was important. So far 48 families are on our Thanksgiving list. Donations are down. Nancy is talking with Kiwanis on Friday regarding our services and needs. Coordination of Services : Given by Barbara Pohn 16 people attended, up from last 2 meetings . Thinks attendence is low because of conflicting N.S.C.C. S. meetings. In January will re-evaluate. Topic was "The Special Problems in the Treatment of Alcoholic Women" . Speakers were Joyce Martin, CAC Counselor, A.D.D. , and Joan Streich, RN, CAC, Alexian Brothers. Elk Grove Distance Classic Committee : Given by Barbara Pohn Recipients of proceeds . Proceeds and distribution listed in handout, page 1 , income, total, formula : page 2 , itemized distribution. Note that Grove Junior High has no request CSB Minutes Page three at this time. . Grove Junior High will be calling Marge with information. Allocation will come out of contingency funds. Barbara Pohn motioned the Community Service Board should approve the suggested allotment for distribution of funds from the Elk Grove Distance Classic as recommended. (copy attached) . Dick seconded. Motion passed. Interqenerational Ad Hoc: Given by Dick Penley Home Economics Department at Elk Grove High is going to make monthly breakfasts for seniors at the Senior Citizen Center. Old Business : Organ Donation Program - Harriet Dalaskey has distributed a lot of forms . New Business : Budget Committee - 1987/88 Budget. Ruth and Dick will be on it and will meet with Nancy. This years budget is to be very specific. Thanksgiving baskets - already addressed. Christmas Party - held on December 16th at 6 : 30 p.m. at the Village Grove apartment clubhouse. Pot luck is .-suggested. Marge was nominated to plan it. December Board meeting -was. cancelled. Resignation of Rev. Roger Schindel.. Resigned from Community Service Board. Roger will be serving a 3 year term at Elk Grove Schaumburg Townships Mental Health .Center Board. Harriet motioned to adjourn. Ruth seconded. Motion carried.
