COORDINATOR'S REPORT -- February 1985
A total of 99 Information and Referral calls were handled by the Community
Service office in January. This compares to 113 calls a year ago January.
The types of services being requested included 6 for senior citizen housing,
16 for financial assistance including 2 for utility bill assistance, 12 for
child care, 2 for alcohol/drug programs, 5 for medical equipment from the
Lending Closet and 3 for emergency assistance due to evictions.
Youth Employment Service had. a. total of 16 job requests, 8 of which were
filled in January. Five new-youths registered with the program. - -At-
present a total of 243 teenagers are registered with the program. Of these
youths, 218 are from east of Route 53 and only 25 are from west of Route
53. More recruitment of teens from west of Route 53 is being planned for
early Spring.
The 1984 Compendium Report has been prepared and a copy is included in this
month's board packet. This report summarizes Community Service activities
during' 1984 and draws some comparisons with the previous two years.
The Community Service proposed budget for 1985-86 was reviewed by the Village
Manager. Small reductions were made in several line items such as telephone,
printing and copying, and auto allowance. The memory typewriter, the
computer terminal and the part-time intern position have all been recommended
by the Manager. The next step in the budget process is Board of Trustees
Budget Committee Review on Monday, March 4, 1985 at 7:30 p.m.
I have been informed that Community Service is to receive the Golden Kettle
Award from the Salvation Army. This award is given to the Service Unit
that collects the most money from the Red Kettle Drive at Christmas. This
means that we collected more in Elk Grove.than any other suburban community.
The Health Department is learning how to use video equipment and has asked
for my assistance in producing two shows for Cable T.V. One show will be
on Community Service and what services are offered through our office and
another one will be on how to select a day care program. The program on
Community Service will be taped on February 20th.
An article on President Reagan's proposal to eliminate the Revenue Sharing
program is included in the board packet. This article highlights the impact
that such a budget cut would have on local social service agencies. Many
of our local agencies receive federal revenue sharing monies from the
townships.
On the brighter side, United Way of Elk Grove reports that the 1984-85 campaign
has yeilded $130,485 ,with yet another month in the campaign. Last year's
campaign totalled $100,597. This significant increase will allow United [day
to fund 14 current United [day agencies and two new agencies, Lifespan and
Talkline.
