Fox Sightings- The Department has fielded a number of calls from residents seeing red foxes in their neighborhoods. Fox sightings used to be common, but until this year sightings were few and far between. Residents on both sides of the Village have had foxes turning up in their yards. These sightings appear to be occurring in a number of communities, but no one knows why. Coyotes will chase foxes out of their territories. The Director went on to say that unlike coyotes, foxes don't go after children or small pets. They usually feed on small mammals. Many times foxes seen during the day and may not show avoidance to people to a great extent so residents show more concern. So far the Department is monitoring the sightings and is not taking any action unless the fox appears injured or becomes aggressive. Residents are told to call 9-1-1 if any animal becomes aggressive or appears injured or sick. Electronic Food Inspections- The Director is continuing to work with IT to bring the food inspection process into the electronic age. The Department and IT hope to have the program up and running later this year. Summer InternL- The seasonal interns have been very busy this summer. West Nile virus (WNV)- The NWMAD is reporting low numbers of WNV mosquitoes so far in 2010. Rainy weather like we have been experiencing helps to flush out small bodies of water, the favorite breeding areas for WNV mosquitoes. As the weather gets hotter and drier those conditions could change. So far no human cases of WNV have been reported in Illinois, but mosquito batches have shown positive results for WNV. Idling Education Program- On July 15i, the JPZ and Recycling Committee met with Clean Air Counts to discuss the Village "No Idling" program. A couple of factors need to be explored before implementing a program: • The cost of signs- Although Clean Air Counts would provide funding for basic signage, the Village uses decorative signs in the residential areas which would be costly • Sign placement- Many areas that would be candidates for "No Idling" signage (schools, etc.) already have designated "No Parking" areas. • Sign Design- Clean Air Counts would want a uniform sign to be used throughout the area. The Village would be able to place a small sticker on the sign. Recommendations would be: • Run an educational campaign. PSA's and TV spots on Channel 6 • Create a brochure to be distributed to students and parents. • Place signs out in areas when a need is determined. • Create additional information for a variety of venues (Newsletter, website (already completed), etc.) E-Waste Recycling- SWANCC scheduled three Saturday E-Waste Collection Events for the summer, in addition to the four weekly drop-off collection locations all ready available. The one remaining Saturday event will be held on October 2nd from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Rolling Meadows Public Works Building. Blood Drive-The next Community Blood Drive will be held on November 6th from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Village Hall, lower level, Rooms A/B/C. Bike Safety- The Director provided information to the Board on Bike Safety. The following is a synopsis of the guidelines: • WEAR A HELMET • Avoid Biking at Night • Ride in the Same Direction as Traffic • Inspect Your Bike • Learn the "Bicycle Rules of the Road" • Be Alert for Hazards • Be Aware of Traffic Around you Poison Ivy_ Recent research has shown an increased toxicity and growth of poison ivy, possibly due to increased levels of green house gases. In light of that information the Director gave the Board a brief lesson on Poison Ivy 101. First remember the old adage, "Leaflets Three Let It Be". Poison ivy always consists of three leaves, with the middle leaf stalk the longest. It can grow as a woody vine attached to trees, a trailing shrub growing along the ground, or an erect wood shrub. Berries have a waxy white appearance. , '_-Very few people are immune to the plant's poisonous sticky oil, known as urushiol. All parts of the plant, dead \_,and alive, contain the toxin which can cause inflammation, sometimes severe, of the skin. Items, even pets, coming in contact with the toxin can also cause a reaction if handled or touched. If a person comes in contact with poison ivy the most important thing to remember is to wash with soap and water, and wash repeatedly. The sooner the oil is removed the less likely a reaction will occur or the less the symptoms of exposure. Influenza Update- the Department is gearing up for another flu season. The Department has received their allotment of flu vaccine for 2010-2011. Dates for clinics will be announced at a later date. The flu shot for 2010-2011 will contain the vaccine to combat H1N1.
