Chairman Jim Christie offered a moment of silence for long-time Board Member Mary Paliganoff, who passed away on October 8, 2010. Action Items:Approval of the Minutes A motion was made by Sal Pace to approve the minutes from August 18, 2010. The motion was seconded by Jim Morrill. The minutes were unanimously approved. Community Service Coordinator Report Food Drive/Pantry- The Interfaith Council is presently running their food drive to assist the Elk Grove Food Pantry. Demand for food pantry services remains high. The information is posted on the website. Holiday Adopt-A-Family- The Community Services Coordinator has received a number of calls from companies wanting to participate in holiday events. The fixings for Thanksgiving meals will be handed out at the food pantry on November 181h to participating individuals and families (76). The Christmas Adopt-A-Family will again be providing families with some holiday spirit. Donors will begin to be matched up with known families that could use some cheer this season. Community Spirit Award- The Community Spirit Award Committee met to nominate eight people for the good deeds they have accomplished. Applications to nominate someone are on the website. Medical Reserve Corps- The CSC attended a meeting involving emergency preparedness regarding Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). MRCs are similar to CERTs in that volunteers assist communities with emergencies, but are comprised of people with medical backgrounds (retired doctors, nurses, etc.). The Village is currently looking into forming a MRC. The CSC will be assisting in this endeavor. There are monies available from the state to assist communities in creating a MRC. Salvation Armv Funding- Salvation Army funding is again in question. The CSC has not received any information on future allocations to the Village (Elk Grove Township is included) as of yet. The CSC used monies to purchase gasoline cards for families needing assistance. _September Financial Activities Salvation Arm Elk Grove Housing Fund September- 1 Family, $200.00 September Outlays- $0.00 Food Pantry 73 families assisted Anti-Smoking Campaign Smoke Free Elk Grove- The staff of the Positive Youth Development Program will work to provide a program for the GreatAmerican Smoke Out on November 18`h at EGHS. Department Director's Report Mary Paliganoff- The Director presented a synopsis of Board member Mary Paliganoff's service to the Community Service Board and later the Board of Health & Community Services. SWANCC E-Waste Location Change- SWANCC has made some changes to the E-Waste collection schedule. Glenview will shut down on 10/28/2010 and Hoffman Estates will close on 11/24/2010. SWANCC has added the Glenview Transfer Station as a drop-off site. This site will have Saturday hours. Two Saturday events are scheduled, Buffalo Grove on 10/23/2010 and Evanston on 10/30/2010. Cyl Document Destruction Event- the Document Destruction Event was very successful. 273 car j loads of paper items were processed that day. One more event is scheduled for Barrington on 10/23/2010. Holiday Light Recycling- The Department will again be offering the Holiday light and extension cord recycling program. The program will run through the end of January 2011. Electronic Food Inspections Reporting- The Environmental Health Inspectors continue to work with IT to work out the bugs with the computerized inspection system. Waste Management Contract- The Village renewed the Solid Waste and Recycling Contract with Waste Management for another 5 years. Highlights of the contract include: • No increase in service fees for two years for single-family homes • A one year freeze in rates for multi-family units, churches, congregate housing units and ABMC • New formula to determine recycling rebate with guaranteed monies • Yard waste sticker pricing going up to $2.00, and cart rental to $2.25 • Replacement of present collection vehicles with new CNG or clean burning diesels. • Enhanced programs such as scholarships, community events, recycling programs West Nile virus (WNV►- As of 10/8/2010 there have been 34 cases and 3 deaths in Illinois attributed to West Nile virus. Department Events & Activities- The Director provided a list of upcoming and ongoing Department events and activities. Environmental Health Inspector's Report September 2010 Activities Report Routine Inspections 49 Misc. Activities 207 Complaints 84 Citations 0 TOTAL 340 New Restaurants- The Village is still awaiting the opening of the two new restaurants at the Town Center. Christine Czernecki will be conducting a preopening inspection next week. Wal- Mart is planning to expand into an open area next to the Christian Book Store with additional space for a supermarket. Community Health Nurse Report Because the State of Illinois has not given the Village word on when children's flu vaccine will be shipped, the children's flu clinic still has not been scheduled at this time. Many of the purveyors were satisfied with the community response and will be back next year. During the off season the Park District will be looking for new businesses/products to be offered at next year's farmers market. The recipients for the Community Spirit Award have been chosen and have taped a Channel 6 program to air next month. Blooming Flowers has offered to deliver a bouquet of flowers every month to deserving resident of the Village choosing. Trustee Czarnik reminded the Board that if ( __,� they were aware of someone in the Village going that extra mile to help someone or some -1 cause to submit their name(s) for the Community Spirit Award. Seven individuals were recently \J awarded Community Spirit Awards. Old Business- None New Business- Lois Colaprete asked if the Director was knowledgeable about the future of the Department of Health & Community Services after his retirement in January. The Director could not offer any information regarding how the Department would be run or who would oversee the Department after his departure. The Director will continue to serve the Village as a consultant and will prepare/attend Board meetings for the foreseeable future. A motion was made by Ann Feichter to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Trustee Nancy Czarnik. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM.
