HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 02/16/1995 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, February 16, 1995 Meeting Room C, Lower Level Elk Grove Municipal Building Board Members Present Board Members Absent Nancy Czarnik Mary Cortes Anne Feichter Ken Krzywicki Jim Foss Bonnie Sokolowski Ruth Guest Alva Kreutzer Staff Present Laura Kuhn Sandra Costanza Mary Paliganoff Dick Penley Staff Absent Barbara Rettberg Sharon Raschke Peg Vallillo Call to Order: The meeting-was called to order at 8:15 p.m. by Mary Paliganoff, Chairperson. Peg Vallillo moved to approve the minutes of the January , 1995 Community Service Board meeting, which was seconded by Jim Foss. The minutes were approved as written. Coordinator's Report: given by Sandy Costanza Sandy announced that Senior Celebration Day would be May 1, at Randhurst Mall, and asked for volunteers to help that day. She also mentioned that the 5th annual Ecumenical Church Choir Concert would be this coming Sunday at Elk Grove High School. The AAL would match whatever monies were collected by check. The results of the Make a Difference Day survey to Community Service Board members was passed out. It was decided that the next step would be for Alve Kreutzer to discuss the results with President Gallitano before determining how to proceed with the planning for the 1995 event. Intergenerational Report: given by Dick Penley Dick elaborated on the program with Elk Grove High School students which began simply as a dream and has developed into a full credit course for Service Learning. During the first semester of the current school year the students have volunteered a total of 25,528 hours of service to our seniors. ® Substance Abuse: given by Alva Kreutzer The Active Parenting Today series at John Jay School has 13 participants. The same program at Salt Creek School will begin February 28 and has 18 participants. The Active Parenting of Teens evaluation will be made as soon as the evaluation forms are received from Elk Grove High School. Senior Citizen Sub-Committee: given by Dick Penley The sub-committee has determined to be task-oriented, rather than simply discussing issues and problems. Senior substance abuse is the issue to be addressed. Dick Penley made a motion that the Community Service Board approve the sub-committee's decision to be task oriented, and its efforts to cooperate with active agencies in investigating substance abuse among seniors in Elk Grove and to put together a quarterly health assessment program. Peg Vallillo seconded that motion. Motion was approved. Parade Committee: given by Anne Feichter The date for the parade has been confirmed, August 6, 1995, The Rotary has moved the date of their RotaryFest to this weekend, in order to get a better carnival attraction. The parade committee has drawn up a letter, list of rules for the parade, and an application which will be brought up this month for approval. A list of village businesses has been drawn up, along with a list of adult and community groups which will receive invitations to participate. The letters of invitation should be mailed by mid-March. Make A Difference Dav: given by Alva Kreutzer The evaluation surveys were passed out. Alve mentioned that Char Besse wants to get the school children more involved. Alva will discuss the evaluation with President Gallitanno and report next month. Volunteer Recognition: given by Sandy Costanza Two awards are upcoming, the Village Board awards and the Senior Medal of Honor, which is sponsored by the Cook County Sheriffs office. Nancy Czarnik nominated Joe Bosslet, a former Village Board member for the Sheriffs Medal of Honor. Peg Vallillo offered to put together a bio of Joe. Peg Vallillo also nominated Kay Moran. The Village awards are given out on April 21, 1995. Letters have been mailed out for nominations for the award. A recognition committee will meet to go over nominees. Members are Alva Kreutzer, Jim Foss, Mary Paliganoff, and Laura Kuhn, New Business: ® Ruth Guest brought up the possibility of holding the monthly Community Service Board meetings at an earlier hour, such as 7:00 pm. A poll was taken at the meeting. Of the seven members who had a preference, four were in favor of an earlier meeting, and three were opposed. Board members who were not present at this meeting would be asked for their preference. If implemented, the meeting time would not change until the new officers were chosen. Mary Paliganoff mentioned that the smoke was coming through the ventilation system and bothering her. Nancy Czarnik said she would mention it again at a Village Board meeting. Sandy was asked to change the meeting room farther away from the lunchroom. Old Business: None Announcements: Jim Foss announced he would be running for Library Board in the upcoming election.
