HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 04/20/1995 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ® ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, April 20, 1995 Village Manager ' s Conference Room - Main level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Ruth Guest Nancy Czarnik Laura Kuhn Anne Feichter Dick Penley Jim Foss Alva Kreutzer Staff Present : Ken Krzywicki Sandra Costanza Mary Paliganoff Sharon Raschke Barbara Rettberg Bonnie Sokolowski Visitor Present: Peg Vallillo Wayne Jozwiak, Kenneth W. Young Center Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 8 : 03 p.m. by Mary Paliganoff, President . As there had not been a quorum present at the March meeting, the February minutes were up for approval . Peg Vallillo motion for approval and Jim Foss seconded. Motion passed. For the March minutes, Mary Paliganoff requested that under Coordinator' s Report, the word "collection" be changed to "baskets" . Mary Cortes motioned for approval with the change of wording and Peg Vallillo seconded. Motion passed. Coordinator' s Report : Sandy introduced Wayne Jozwiak, who works at the Kenneth W. Young Center. Sandy reported that she had attended Bob Pohn' s funeral . Barbara Pohn had been a Community Service Board member. Thirty three families had been helped at Easter. This was the lowest number in years, mostly due to better screening and because some eligible clients made plans to be with family for the holiday. Sandy also said she had attended the Youth in Action Conference in Chicago and a Disaster Training Clinic in March. The 'mock disaster' was a tornado touching down in Busse Woods . Sandy indicated that the Fire Department is willing to conduct a training for the Community Service Board to prepare them for any potential disaster they may be called upon to assist with. Intern' s Report : Sharon stated that her Thursday class is over and she will be able to attend the Community Service Board meetings at least through August . ® CSB Minutes Page two Intergenerational Report : Given by Sandy Costanza in Dick Penley' s absence. No report, but Sandy stated that there was only one house left in Elk Grove Village to be painted. Substance Abuse : Given by Alva Kreutzer The Active Parenting Today has 25 parents in the 6 week course. The future of CRUSH is uncertain. Without new members, the program could cease to exist . Queen of the Rosary School has now joined CRUSH and will take part in the Red Ribbon (substance abuse) program in October. Senior Sub-Committee: Given by Sandy Costanza The meeting revolved around the task force discussing health screenings spread out over the year, and on-going each year. The task force will discuss what programs currently exist and see what is needed. Suggested screenings/clinics would include the fall flu clinic, podiatric, vision, hearing, cholesterol, and perhaps others . • Parade: Given by Anne Feichter Letters of invitation to participate in the parade were mailed out on March 17th to businesses and youth and adults community groups . The letter included the rules and an application, with a deadline for participation of June 15th. Additional letters are being sent out as new names or businesses are added. The police and fire departments has approved the route, staging area, and parking. Letters were sent to the principals of Elk grove High School and Salt Creek School and the superintendent of District 59 , regarding permission to use the school grounds . Volunteer Recognition: Ralph Schumann was selected to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award to be given at the Village Dinner this month. 40th Anniversary: Given by Nancy Czarnik The theme has been selected - 1140 Years, A Firm Foundation for the Future" . The next Village Newsletter will announce the theme, along with information on a contest to design a logo, using the theme. A fundraising dinner dance and silent auction will kick off the year' s celebration. The invitation will be in the Village Newsletter, and everyone is invited to attend. CSB Minutes Page three Youth Council : Submitted by Laura Kuhn and given by Sandy . Costanza The council met in April to critique last summer' s events and to plan for next summer. Rainbow Falls was the most successful event. More teens are needed to participate. The events will be geared either to the junior high or to senior high school students, as the age difference is too great to meet the needs of both at a single event. New Business : The election of officers for the 1995-1996 Community Service Board was held and the results were as follows : Anne Feichter, President Bonnie Sokolowski, Vice President Alva Kreutzer, Secretary Old Business : The national winners for Make A Difference Day will be announced in next Sunday' s USA Today. qW Alva Kreutzer asked if Make A Difference Day for 1995, while not an official village event, might be an event sponsored or spearheaded by the Community Service Board. After much discussion, Barbara Rettberg moved that the Board create a sub- committee to determine what might be done to observe Make A Difference Day in Elk Grove Village. Jim Foss seconded the motion. Motion passed. Announcements : The Village Board passed an official smoking policy. The Community Service Board will be meeting at 7 : 00 p.m. beginning in May. Adjournment: Peg Vallillo moved that the meeting be adjourned. Ken Krzywicki seconded the motion.
