Costanza Ken Krzywicki Laura Kuhn Staff Absent: Mary Paliganoff Sharon Raschke Barbara Rettberg Bonnie Sokolowski Peg Vallillo Call to Order: Anne Feichter, President, called the meeting to order at 7 : 05 p.m. ® A motion to approve the minutes was made by Peg, seconded by Jim. Motion carried. Coordinator ' s Report: Given by Sandra Costanza The mock interviews with students for Make A Difference Day will take place Saturday, November 18th at Village Hall . Nancy volunteered to greet the 6 students from Conant High School . Community Service is still in need of volunteers for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing campaign. The times are from 10 - 8 : 00 p.m. at Jewel and Eagle . The Coordination of Services meeting will be on November 28, 1995 . The topic will be "The Grief Experience" . The Happy Memories annual Christmas party will take place December 9th from 12 - 4 : 00 p.m. at the Pavilion. The festivities include : a visit from Santa magician and face painting. Community Service has identified 3'5 families for the annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive . Four families are currently not adopted. Torch carriers are needed for the 1996 Olympics . The United Way of America in conjunction with the United Way of • Elk Grove is seeking interested residents . Applications must be postmarked by 11/30/95 and must be received by December 8th. The Selection Committee will be choosing winners based on their CSB Minutes Page two involvement in the community. Community Service has applications for anyone interested. Intern' s Report: No report . Intergenerational : Community Service referred the name of the senior whom was not chosen for Make-A-Difference-Day to the Serve Our Seniors Program. The students recently completed painting her home . Substance Abuse Prevention: Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva is between meetings of both CRUSH and Fighting Back but passed along a brief description of each schools ' red ribbon activities . It was again another successful year for Red Ribbon. Senior Citizen Sub-Committee: Given by Sandy Costanza The committee met on November 6th to discuss the future of the Committee. After some discussion, the Sub-Committee came to a consensus that it would be best to operate on an "ad-hoc" basis . Alva made a motion that the senior citizen sub-committee not operate as a standing sub-committee, but as an ad-hoc sub- committee. The motion was seconded by Barbara Rettberg. The motion carried. Make-A-Difference-Day: Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva passed out a brief description of what each group did on Make-A-Difference-Day. Enclosed in the board packet was the description of the Community Service Board' s project which was sent into the national organization. Alva also posted Elk Grove Village ' s project on America On-line. She was very thrilled with the turnout of people and projects . Alva is currently appearing on Koffee Klatch along with Sandy. A thank you letter has been sent to Dennis Gallitano on behalf of Make-A-Difference-Day and Red Ribbon week. 40th Anniversary: Given by Nancy Czarnik Seventeen entries for the logo contest have been received. The logo, which will be used on memorabilia, has been chosen with 2 honorable mentions . The Dinner Dance invitation form will be in the December Elk Grove Villager newsletter. Mary Paliganoff will send letters to former Community Service Board members to ask if they wish to sit at a Community Service Board reserved table. The Rotary Club Festival is scheduled for June 26th - 30th. The Anniversary Sock Hop date is scheduled for June 28th at the Rotaryfest . The Committee wants to have a "picnic" in the complex" after the parade . An eagle scout will be planning a children' s party for the residents . Rotary Club will assist the scout in finding a location for the party on June 29th. The Fire ® CSB Minutes Page three Department will be coordinating the 40th Anniversary Parade . An application for the novelty license plates is complete . Ken has the information for this for anyone interested. Budqet: Given by Sandy Costanza The proposed Community Service Department budget is due to the Finance Department by December 11, 1995 . The Budget Committee will meet on December 7 , 1995, to view the proposed budget and give recommendations . New Business • Alva asked Sandy if she has viewed the Community Service blurb on the Village ' s internet home page? Alva wants to make sure the Community Service information is up to date. Nancy has volunteered to host the Community Service Board holiday gathering on December 21st. The format will be a pot luck dinner at 7 : 00 p.m. Mary Cortes told us about a Maywood School District which is in need of toys , cassette tapes, hats/mittens . Community Service . would like to pass on donations to this school district . Alva suggested that Mary contact District 59 because there were desks and chairs left over from the sale at Lively and District 59 is going to throw them away. The Maywood School may be able to benefit from this . Alva passed out a flyer for a young girl at Clearmont School who has a cancerous brain tumor. The Spaghetti Warehouse is hosting a fundraiser and all proceeds will be given to the girl ' s family. Old Business : Mary Cortes suggested that Community Service look at establishing goals for the coming year. The members discussed the possibility of a strategic planning session or re-visiting goals from past planning sessions . Adjournment : A motion to adjourn was made by Ken, seconded by Laura . The motion carried. E . Wayne Jozwiak, KWYC Call to Order: Anne Feichter opened the meeting at 7 : 06 p.m. • Motion to approve the January minutes were moved by Mary Paliganoff and seconded by Ken Krzywicki . Corrections : delete the word BOARD, last word on first page. Page 3, first sentence should read: will be "handling" administration and clerical for the 40th . . . Delete Bonnie Sokolowski from members present. Motion carried. Coordinator' s Report: Report included in packets . Personnel : Anne Feichter, Mary Cortes, Bonnie Sokolowski and Ken Krzywicki are members of the committee. They have met with Dick Olson of the Personnel Department. To date, 12 resumes have been received. This was before the ad in the Daily Herald. Of the 12 applicants , 3 will be called for an interview. Mary and Anne will be doing the initial interviews . An ad has been placed in the National Association of Social Workers ' February newsletter. Qualified candidates should possess a BA degree . Budget: Ken Krzywicki , Anne Feichter and Alva Kreutzer are members of the committee . They have had one meeting and are currently awaiting word from the manager ' s office . A new computer is the only major addition to the budget. A copy of the proposed budget was on ® hand for all to view. CSB Minutes Page two PIC Scholarship: Laura Kuhn, Peg Vallillo, Bonnie Sokolowski and Mary Cortes are on the committee. Jackie Kelley from PIC is soliciting corporate donations . To date, Community Service has received 14 requests for applications . January 31st is the deadline. Decisions will be made in February and awards will be given in March. Bonnie will call Jackie to see if a press release will be issued. Volunteer Recognition: One to three recipients are chosen every year by the Community Service Board. In February, letters are mailed to various organizations asking for nominations . The committee, which consists of Mary Paliganoff, Barbara Rettberg and Alva Kreutzer, will meet in March to choose a candidate(s ) . The Volunteer Recognition Awards will be presented at the Village Dinner on May 17th. Intergenerational : No report. Substance Abuse : Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva gave reports from the Fighting Back Advisory Board and C.R.U. S .H. The Fighting Back initiative continues to receive state funding. The Peer Jury program is progressing. The "parties" booklet, which was first given to high school students three years ago, was again given to incoming freshmen. C.R.U. S .H. will again be offering the Active Parenting Today program. It will be at Salt Creek School, but this time will be held during the day. Alva passed along an update of the Active Parenting of Teens summary of evaluation from Grove Junior High and Rolling Meadows High School . The program has been rated superior. To date, over 300 parents have been trained via the Active Parenting series . C.R.U. S .H. also distributed 2, 000 Mother' s Against Drunk Driving red ribbons . These can be seen displayed on cars during the holiday season. 40th Anniversary: Given by Nancy Czarnik To date, there are 475 attendees for the dinner dance. Four hundred is the break even point. Nancy brought a sample license plate with the anniversary logo and slogan. The first 5-10 license plates will be auctioned off . The remaining may be purchased through the village . These plates are valid for use from June lst to July 31st. The fee will be $40 . 00 . Nancy showed the board a 40th Anniversary ruby red pen which will be a "favor" at the dance along with the place card. Over 80 items have been donated for the auction. Nancy is currently appearing on Koffee Klatch to promote the anniversary. Nancy talked about a few of the donated items . Community Service sent out letters under Mary Paliganoff ' s signature to all former Community Service Board members asking them to attend. Anne Feichter reported on the CSB Minutes Page three 40th Anniversary Parade. Letters have been mailed to last year' s participants and other prospective participants . New Business • Disaster Training - This is scheduled for April . Greg Riddle of the Fire Department will be handling the training. He wants to include the Red Cross . The training will be held between 7 : 30 and 9 : 00 p.m. with a short business meeting following the training. Strategic Planning - Board members will get copies of the vision/dream sheet prepared in 1993 by the Community Service Board and will follow up at the March meeting. Old Business : A letter from Dennis Gallitano regarding the Senior Sub-Committee was in the Board folders . A thank you letter from Sandy Costanza was read. Wayne Jozwiak from the Kenneth W. Young Center informed the group of the financial problems of PADS . He hopes to have additional information regarding the status of the program. Christopher Ziemba from H.O.M.E . (Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly) advised that his organization is in need of furniture and will pick-up donations in Elk Grove Village on Saturdays . Furniture is given directly to those who need it. H.O.M.E . also accepts dishes, small household items, refrigerators and stoves . Mary Cortes announced that she will be getting married on June 21 , 1996 . Adjournment : Dick motioned to adjourn. Barbara seconded.
