HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 02/15/1996 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, February 15, 1996 Conference Room A - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present : Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Anne Feichter Nancy Czarnik Ruth Guest Jim Foss Alva Kreutzer Ken Krzywicki Barbara Rettberg Laura Kuhn Mary Paliganoff Staff Present: Dick Penley None Bonnie Sokolowski Peg Vallillo Staff Absent: Sharon Raschke, Intern Guests : Mary Hale, Site Director Christus Victor Church - PADS Wayne Jozwiak, KWYC Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7 : 01 p.m. by Bonnie Sokolowski , Vice President. Mary Paliganoff made a correction to the minutes of the January meeting. On page two under the "40th Anniversary" heading, instead of a letter sent to former board members "asking" them to attend it should read "inviting" them to attend. On page three under the "New Business - Disaster Training" Mary Cortes corrected the "short business meeting following the training" to "a short business meeting before the training" . A motion to accept the minutes as corrected was made by Dick Penley and seconded by Ken Krzywicki . Motion carried. Dick Penley moved that guest speakers be permitted to speak to the board members before the regular business is conducted so that they don' t have to sit through the whole meeting. The members of the board concurred. Mary Hale, Site Director of the Christus Victor Church site of PADS was invited to offer the board information concerning the PADS operation. She explained the purpose of the Coalition, the individual PADS sites operations , the need for volunteers and answered questions from the board members . The board thanked her. Intern ' s Report : Report included in packets . Personnel : Given by Mary Cortes Mary reported that after the last meeting, an ad was put into the Chicago Tribune with tremendous response . Four interviews have • CSB Minutes Page two completed, of the four, one is very strongly recommended, one, a possibility. The personnel committee plan to meet next week to review the resumes . They hope to make their selection and conduct the interviews through March. A hopeful target date is May 1996 . Dick Penley suggested that the board should postpone the Strategic Planning Session and the Disaster Training until a new coordinator has been chosen and is on the job. The Board members agreed to his proposal after Mary Cortes moved and Ken Krzywicki seconded her motion. Budget : Given by Ken Krzywicki An increase is needed in the budget for 1996-97 because a computer and software are sorely needed. Any questions about the budget should be directed to members of the budget committee. Nancy Czarnik strongly recommended that Community Service Board members be present at the Village Board Budget meeting to support the Community Service budget. PIC Scholarship: Given by Bonnie Sokolowski Communicating by telephone, the committee agreed to extend the deadline for scholarship requests until March because of the lack of requests . Fourteen ( 14 ) applications were mailed. To date, only one reply has been received. Intergenerational : Given by Dick Penley The peer jury program of District 214 is progressing. A booklet has been prepared to help groups put together a jury and inform them how to serve the youths . 40th Anniversary: Given by Nancy Czarnik The kick-off party was a great success . 824 people attended. A special feeling of community was shared by everyone present. $13,500 was raised which will be used to fund the other planned 40th Anniversary activities : A 50 ' s party, a children' s birthday party, the parade. A teen party is being planned with the youth governmental council . Banners announcing "Elk Grove Village - Peony Village" have been ordered and will be placed along the "corridor" at Biesterfield Road as soon as they are received. The next meeting of the 40th Anniversary Committee will be held on March 11th. At the party 60 license plates were sold. In the last 2 days , 12 more have been sold for a total of 72 plates sold. Substance Abuse: Given by Mary Cortes for Alva Kreutzer Fighting Back now has a curfew brochure and the Task Force is studying smoking ordinances for the different villages to decide how Fighting Back can support them. Alva received a special award for the District 214 Outstanding Community Partner. ® CSB Minutes Page three Senior Medal of Honor: Given by Peg Vallillo Because the name of a candidate for the Cook County Sheriff Senior Medal of Honor must be submitted by March 1, a decision was made by board members to submit the name of Mary Hale, PADS Site Director of Christus Victor Church. In the future, it was suggested that we appoint a committee in January of each year to seek candidates for the Senior Medal of Honor. By March the selection process will be completed and ready to submit . Family Fest: Given by Mary Cortes District 59 will hold a Family Fest at Grove Junior High School on Saturday, March 19 , 1996 from noon until 4 : 00 p.m. Community Service will have a table and will pass out information. Mary Paliganoff, Laura Kuhn and Jim Foss offered to be available to help Mary Cortes at the fest if needed. Announcements : The next meeting of the Community Service Board will be held on Thursday, March 21, 1996 at 7 : 00 p.m. Adjournment• Mary Paliganoff motioned to adjourn. A motion to approve the February minutes was made by Jim Foss . ® Seconded by Peg Vallillo. Motion carried . Intern' s Report: Given by Sharon Raschke Out of the 20 families for Easter food baskets, 7 have been matched. A donor basket should include an Easter Dinner and anything else . Donors are asked to bring their baskets on April 4th. Recipients will pick up baskets in the afternoon. Personnel : Given by Anne Feichter Approximately 170-180 resumes have been received. The advertisement in the Chicago Tribune brought in most of the applicants . The committee has interviewed 13, and they have narrowed it down to 4 plus 2 alternates . Remaining interviews will be held the first week of April . A decision should be made soon after. It is hopeful the new coordinator will start by early May. Budget: Given by Anne Feichter The committee went before the Village Board on March 20th. All of the managers recommendations were approved. PIC Scholarship: Two applications have been received. The deadline has been extended to April 1st . The PIC Dinner will be April 18th. S .H. will dissolve as of June, 1996 . The Active Parenting series will be assumed by Fighting Back and Elk Grove Township Youth and Family Services . 40th Anniversary: Given by Nancy Czarnik The group has divided into sub-committees : Sock Hop scheduled for June 26th; Village Wide Celebration (Birthday Party) on July 17th; Parade and Post Parade activity on July 21st; 40th Anniversary memorabilia and grand marshall . Channel 6 will be doing a segment on the anniversary. The Elk Grove Village Library summer reading program will incorporate the 40th Anniversary in the program. An article on the parade has been approved for the next village newsletter. It will appear in both the residential and business editions . Intergenerational : Given by Ruth Guest Both Conant and Elk Grove High School have received the National Award for Excellence . Volunteer Recognition: Given by Alva Kreutzer Four applications have been received. ® Senior Medal of Honor: Given by Peg Vallillo Mary Hale has been chosen for the award. She will receive it at a ceremony on April 23rd. Make A Difference Day: Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva asked if she could start preliminary work on the project, as she has had a preliminary conversation with Mary Hall of PADS . PADS is hoping to do another walk for the homeless . Consensus from the committee was Alva to proceed with discussion concerning Make-A-Difference Day. Sharon added that the Church Council is having their food drive this year on Make-A-Difference Day. Nominatinq Committee : Barbara Rettberg and Mary Cortes volunteered to make phone calls to committee members asking if they want to be a candidate for office next year. Mary Paliganoff voiced some concerns over last year' s process . She asked if the committee could notify candidates ahead of time if someone was running against them. That did not occur last year. She also suggested that candidates run for only one office. And, if we could not attend the meeting could we get an absentee ballot . Alva suggested that candidates for office be required to serve first as secretary before being allowed to serve to serve as president or vice president . The Board did not act on this • suggestion. ® CSB Minutes Page three Announcements : Elk Grove Food Pantry is low on food. Three articles have been submitted for the Elk Grove Village newsletter: Youth Employment Service; the Volunteer Directory and Disabilities Directory. The Strategic Planning and Disaster Training have been tabled until the new coordinator is hired. Wayne Jozwiak, from the Kenneth W. Young Center indicated that the Senior Program of the Elk Grove/Schaumburg Alliance for the Mentally Ill has lost space at the gym. The are looking for a gym to hold a once a week program. Alva gave Wayne the Director of Buildings and Grounds phone number of District 59 . She told Wayne his best bet would be Grove Junior High because they have a gym and two multi-purpose rooms . A room is needed for Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 : 30 p.m. Adjournment : Motion to adjourn made by Ken Krzywicki and seconded by Peg Vallillo. Motion carried.
