HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 05/16/1996 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 16 , 1996 Conference Room A - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present : Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Jim Foss Nancy Czarnik Alva Kreutzer Anne Feichter Laura Kuhn Ruth Guest Peg Vallillo Ken Krzywicki Mary Paliganoff Staff : Dick Penley Elizabeth Madden Barbara Rettberg Bonnie Sokolowski Guests : Wayne Jozwiak, KWYC Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7 : 04 p.m. by Anne Feichter, President. A motion to approve the April minutes was made by Barbara Rettberg and seconded by Ken Krzywicki . Corrections were made on page 2 in the first sentence. The word officer was replaced with the words board member officer. It was also noted that the minutes from the executive session are for board members only and are not for publication for the general public . Intern' s Report: Report included in Board packets. Committee Reports : Substance Abuse: Mary Cortes Fighting Back continues training on conflict resolution/peer mediation in the local schools . A copy of Fighting Back' s new curfew brochure was distributed and will be available to local communities . Alva Kreutzer was re-elected as President of Fighting Back for ' 96 - ' 97 . 40th Anniversary: The "Oldies But Goodies" Sock Hop will take place on June 28th. On June 29th the Children' s Birthday Party will be celebrated. This party will be organized by Derrick Pike, an Eagle Scout . Invitations will be sent out to long-term residents of Elk Grove in the hopes that they may come forward to share their stories of • Elk Grove Village both past and present . CSB Minutes Page two The Anniversary Parade will consist of 70 units, 8 bands and 8 musical groups . Businesses will be contacted for donations for this event . Bill Shannon will be the Parade Marshal . Applications are still being accepted for participation in the parade. In totality there will be 100-200 units participating. The Armed Forces Band sponsored by Paddock Publications will perform in October. Ken Krzywicki reported that 100 Anniversary plates were sold. The remainder of the plates will be bought by the Village for use on their vehicles . Anniversary mugs and hats are still available for purchase. Mary Schulz is now a member on the 40th Anniversary Committee. Nancy Czarnik will be appearing on Channel 6 ' s Koffee Klatch on July 10th for the 40th Anniversary Celebration. . Intergenerational : Ruth Guest Elk Grove High School will be hosting the seniors of the complex and Elk Grove Senior Center on May 8th for dinner and the play Guys and Dolls . New Business : None Old Business : Disaster training for the board will be postponed until August to avoid conflicts with the 40th Anniversary festivities and Community Service Board members ' vacations . Beth Madden will contact the Fire Department to make arrangements for the training. The Red Cross may also be involved in the training. Announcements : Anne Feichter welcomed Beth Madden the new Community Service Coordinator. Beth addressed the Board giving a brief overview of what she has done as of date as well as what she hopes to do in the future. She plans to compile statistics on clients both past and present in order to get a better handle on the composition and needs of the client population. Beth reported that she visited a variety of places including: the Village of Mt. Prospect, the City of Des Plaines, Northwest Community Service, and the Bethlehem Food Bank. CSB Minutes Page three While visiting the Bethlehem Food Bank Beth learned of their program "Project : Take Charge" which helps people move toward self-sufficiency. She also looked into Naperville ' s Family Spirit Commission program which rewards families or individuals for random acts of kindness within the community. Both of these programs may be worth investigating for Community Service clients . The Community Service Department is still in the process of looking for an intern. Since the search began later in the year it has been a difficult process locating a suitable candidate. Anne reminded Board members that the Village Dinner will take place on May 17th. Wayne Jozwiak from Kenneth W. Young Center informed the Board that ground breaking for the Center has not yet begun. Announcements : The next regular meeting of the Community Service Board will be June 20th at 7 : 00 p.m. Adjournment: Dick Penley motioned to adjourn and Bonnie Sokolowski seconded.
