HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 06/19/1997 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ® ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, June 19, 1997 Conference Room C - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Ed Ruszkowski Nancy Czarnik Anne Feichter Jim Foss Staff Present: Ruth Guest Gerri Literski Mary Hale Beth Madden Paul Klevinsky Alva Kreutzer Salvatore Pace Guest Present: Mary Paliganoff Chris Prochno Dick Scholten Peg Vallillo Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Anne Feichter, Acting President. Jim Foss and Paul Klevinsky passed out ballots to be used for a closed voting of officers. The results of the voting are as follows: President-Alva Kreutzer Vice President Mary Paliganoff Secretary- Peg Vallillo Anne thanked the Board members for their cooperation and support during her years as President. Alva Kreutzer, President, asked for any corrections to the May minutes. Mary Paliganotf noted that her name had not been included in the minutes. With that correction, Anne Feichter moved that the minutes be approved. The motion was seconded by Jim Foss and approved by the members of the Board. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beth Madden Report was included in packet. Beth reported that all the directories are up-to-date. Nancy Czarnik introduced Chris Prochno, Village Trustee. She was interested in observing the Community Service Board at work. Intern's Report: Given by Gerri Literski Report was included in packet. Committee Reports: By-Laws Committee: Given by Alva Kreutzer Mary P., Alva, Beth, and Paul went over the by-laws and made a few changes. A copy of the by- laws with the changes was passed out to Board members. The changes were discussed by the members present. Elk Grove Community Action Award: Given by Mary Hale ® CSB Minutes Page two A meeting was held to discuss the Elk Grove Community Spirit Award. A the next meeting, a proposal and budget will be prepared. Needs Assessment Committee: Given by Mary Cortes Mary Cortes was selected as chairperson of this committee which will work on conducting a needs assessment of Elk Grove Village. The results of the assessment will help guide the Community Service Board. The project timeline will be July- November with the assessment being conducted in September. Mary Cortes reported that the Police Department's Peer Jury is on summer recess. The Police Departments PAST program (Police and Seniors Together) has a meeting set for 6/27/97 at 1:00 p.m. at the Village Hall. The topic for the meeting is"Fire Safety". Volunteer Committee: Given by Anne Feichter The Committee met prior to the Community Service Board meeting this evening. The purpose of this committee is to make people aware of the volunteer opportunities in the Village by working with various Elk Grove Village organizations and by utilizing Channel 6. New Business: Make A Difference Day: Given by Alva Kreutzer Make A Difference Day will be Saturday, October 25, 1997. Alva gave a brief history of the • Community Service Board's involvement for the benefit of the new board members. She asked for a volunteer to act as chairperson. She asked also for suggestions for projects. Mary reviewed the article IV of the By-Laws, concerning each Board member being a member of a standing committee. After discussion it was decided to have each member be on one committee and that the standing committees should be formed at the next board meeting. Mary Paliganoff asked if permanent name badges could be made available for the Board members. Jim offered to check at ABMC for badges. Peg Vallillo requested that each committee chairperson furnish the secretary with a written copy of his or her report. Old Business: None Board Members Reports: Mary Cortes: Mary reported on the success of the Police PAST meetings with Officer Debbie Damore. Anne Feichter: Anne reported on the parade which will be held Sunday, June 29, 1997. She also passed around a volunteer sign up sheet. Pea Vallillo: Peg reported that she attended a KYC Senior Advisory Council meeting where subsidized housing for seniors was presented by a member of the Kenneth Young Center. She also attended a program called "Age is a Stage" presented by Karolyn Swanson and Erin Houlihan from ABMC in which discussions were held. Participants experienced simulated physical problems associated with aging to help them become more sensitive to older adults. CSB Minutes Page three Alva Kreutzer: Alva reported that at the last meeting of Fighting Back she was elected president and Chief Ron Pavlock of Mount Prospect Police Department was elected vice president. The Fighting Back coordinator has applied for the state board grant. They hope to receive $45,000 again this year. The committee is working on a multi-cultural guide. The next step will be to raise funds for it. Jim Foss: Jim reported that he is hoping to receive toys in good condition (new or used) from anyone. They will be given to Brother Jeffrey of the Alexian Brothers to be used for the Brothers' Philippine missions. Jim also announced that the new CEO of ABMC is Mr. Michael Schwartz from New Jersey. Announcements: Beth Madden announced that the Cook County Sheriff will give award to outstanding youth volunteers.
