HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 08/14/1997 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, August 14, 1997 Conference Room C - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Jim Foss Nancy Czarnik Ruth Guest Anne Feichter Mary Paliganoff Mary Hale Peg Vallillo Paul Klevinsky Alva Kreutzer Staff Present: Salvatore Pace Beth Madden Ed Ruszkowski Dick Scholten Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Alva Kreutzer, President. There were no corrections to the July minutes. A motion to approve the July minutes was made by Ed Ruszkowski, seconded by Dick Scholten and approved by the members of the Board. AgencV Presentation: There was no presentation tonight as the speaker canceled. President's Report: Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva reported she will not be able to attend the next Board meeting and will call on Mary Paliganoff will run the meeting. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beth Madden Report in packet. Beth announced that the Employee Volunteer Program has matched employees with seniors and should begin soon. Also, the Community Paint-a-thon is scheduled for September 6th. A needy senior resident will be the recipient of this year's paint-a thon. Beth is looking for people to assist her with this project. Intern's Report: _ Report in packet. Beth Madden reported Gem Literski has a class on Board meeting evenings and will not be present. Committee Reports: Elk Grove Community Spirit Award: Given by Mary Hale Mary Hale met with President Johnson to address his concerns and questions regarding the project. She also visited with the staff in Naperville that has implemented that city's spirit awards. Mary discussed information she learned from Naperville and the Board agreed to bring the project before the Committee of the Whole meeting on September 9th. The next committee meeting will take place on September 2, 1997 at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Service Office. Needs Assessment Committee: Given by Mary Cortes Mary Cortes reported the needs assessment questionnaire was approved by the Village Board at the August 12th Committee of the Whole meeting. Various community locations have been sent letters seeking permission for volunteers to be stationed there to complete the surveys. The target dates of the community-wide survey are September 26th and 27th. Board members agreed to volunteering for a shift on those dates and to completing surveys with neighbors, co- workers, etc. Additional volunteers will also be needed for the project. A training for the project will take place on September 18th at 6:30 p.m. The next committee meeting will take place on September 4, 1997 at 8:00 a.m. at the Community Service Office. Volunteer Committee: Given by Anne Feichter The committee met on August 6th and reviewed a list of organizations which might be interested in gaining more volunteer or community support. A letter and brief response sheet will be sent to community agencies. Ed Ruszkowski moved the letter and response sheet be approved for distribution, Mary Hale seconded the motion and the Board approved it unanimously. The committee will use the responses to determine how the committee will work towards promoting the organization's volunteer needs. The committee plans to work with Channel 6 for a passible "Volunteer Opportunity of the Month" segment or to utilize press releases and the Village newsletter. The next meeting is scheduled for September 8th at 8:00 a.m. in the Community Service Office. New Business: Youth and Family Resource Directory: Given by Beth Madden The Community Service Office will be developing a Youth and Family Directory. Board members are encouraged to submit any ideas regarding the directory to Beth. Beth will bring samples of other directories to the next Board meeting. Old Business: Make a Difference Day: Given by Paul Klevinsky Paul has agreed to chair the committee. He has spoken with President Johnson regarding an official proclamation for Make a Difference Day. Letters promoting Make a Difference Day will be sent to local organizations. Paul will meet with local PADS volunteers to assist in organizing a walk for that program. Nancy Czarnik reported the Board of Trustees will be seeking a project to complete for Make a Difference Day, Volunteer Recognition: Given by Alva Kreutzer A committee was formed with the purpose of developing criteria for selecting the recipients of the Volunteer Recognition Award. Mary Paliganoff, Alva Kreutzer, Sal Pace and Dick Scholten volunteered for the committee which will meet on September 15, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. in then Community Service Office. Sheriff's Youth Service Medal of Honor: The Board packet included information regarding three youths nominated for the Cook County Sheriffs Youth Service Medal of Honor. Board members reviewed the youths information, As Beth Madden reported there are no limits to the number of youths to be submitted for this honor, Mary Cortes moved all three be submitted. Sal Pace seconded the motion which was then approved. The three youth to be submitted for the honor are: Jim Bisceglie, Mike Voss, and Michael Nalepa. Youth Committee: Given by Alva Kreutzer Alva attended the last Youth Committee meeting. As the committee is still in the process of developing goals and objectives, Alva suggests the Board wait to decide on any possible relationship between the Board and the committee. Nanct Czarnik will attend the next Youth Committee meeting scheduled for September 15, 1997. Community Service Board Members Reports: Mary Hale reports PADS will open in October. There will be a training for volunteers in September. Announcements: The next meeting of the Community Service Board will be held on September 18, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. There will be a training for the Community Needs Assessment Survey at 6:30 p.m. that evening prior to the meeting. Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. after the motion to do so was made by Nancy Czarnik, seconded by Ed Ruszkowski and approved by the members of the Board.
