HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 01/15/1998 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 1998 Conference Room C- Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Mary Cortes Jim Foss Nancy Czarnik Ruth Guest Anne Feichter Mary Hale Staff Present: Paul Klevinsky Beth Madden Alva Kreutzer Salvatore Pace Mary Paliganoff Ed Ruszkowski Dick Scholten Peg Vallillo Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Alva Kreutzer, Chairperson Corrections to be made for the November minutes were as follows: On page two under"Volunteer Committee". The sentence should read, "Each member was assigned a few organizations to learn of their needs and to prepare a program presentation for Channel 6 "Elk Grove Village Matters" and press releases pertaining to these groups". On page three- first paragraph should read "Corrected forms will be passed out at the January 15th meeting of the Community Service Board and are to be turned into the Community Service office by January 29th, 1998" etc. A motion to approve the corrected minutes of the November meeting was made by Anne Feichter, seconded by Ed Ruszkowski, and approved by members of the Board. Chairperson's Report: Given by Alva Kreutzer There will be no agency report this month. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beth Madden Report in packet. Copies of the 1998 Budget request for the Community Service office were passed out to Board members present. The position of Intern has been eliminated and the Youth Employment Service program has been absorbed by the Community Service office. The budget will be presented to the Village Board early in March. • ® CSB Minutes Page two Committee Reports: Elk Grove Village Community Spirit Award: Given by Mary Hale The Committee met on January 12, 1998. Six individuals have been nominated for the awards but have not received them yet because the committee is still attempting to finalize the sponsors. The officers elected for the Spirit Award Committee are Leslie DeMoss, Chairman; Rob McCracken, Vice Chairman and Treasurer; and Lynn Atkinson-Tovar, Secretary. The next meeting of the Committee will be on February 4, 1998 at 6:30 p.m. Needs Assessment Committee: Given by Mary Cortes The Board members received information packets containing the results of the survey. The Committee met in early December, 1997 and discussed various issues. - The survey was intended for use by the Community Service Board; it cannot be viewed as reliable/valid for other uses. - How will the Community Service Board use the results? - How should we disseminate the results? Mary thanked the office of the Community Service Board- Marty and Beth for all their data input and administrative assistance. As well as the Village Information Systems Department. The next meeting of the Committee will be on January 27, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Volunteer Committee: Given by Anne Feichter Most recent meeting was Monday, January 12, 1998. The Committee determined the scheduling of the Volunteer Opportunity of the Month for Channel 6 "Elk Grove Village Matters" as follows: February- Manor Health Care Services March - Second Chance Adoption April- Day Care Center May- Senior Center June- United Way July- Food Pantry Talkline is running currently this month on "Elk Grove Village Matters". Our first three volunteer opportunities- Kenneth Young Center, PADS of Elk Grove, and Talkline were also highlighted in the December issue of"Elk Grove Villager" mailed to all residences. The next committee meeting will be on March 19th at 6:30 p.m. New Business: A committee is needed to choose a recipient or recipients for the Workforce Development Council Scholarship. The recipient must be an Elk Grove Village resident who demonstrates a financial need for additional training or education. The Community Service office will advertise the scholarship. Applications are due in the Community Service office by March 6, 1998. ® The Committee will meet on March 26th at 6:30 p.m. Mary Cartes, Mary Paliganoff and Peg Vallillo will serve as committee members. CSB Minutes Page three Volunteer Recognition Committee: Letters announcing the award will be sent out January 23, 1998 with applications due on February 27th at the Community Service office. A meeting of the volunteer recognition award committee, made up of Ed Ruszkowski, Mary Paliganoff, Dick Scholten, and Alva Kreutzer will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 5th at the Community Service office. Old Business: Make A Difference Day: Given by Beth Madden Beth suggested a different format for Make A Difference Day activities-to be held indoors. It was decided to discuss this idea at the March meeting, to form a committee and to start making plans as soon as possible after the March meeting. Personnel Committee: Given by Sal Pace Members received the revised evaluation form in their packets. They are to be given to Alva Kreutzer or dropped off at the Community Service office, in an envelope marked for Alva Kreutzer. A discussion followed as to whether the results of the evaluation should be shared with Beth or Gary Parrin first. It was decided that Alva should ask Gary which is his preference. Because so many matters will be brought up at the February meeting for discussion and decision it was decided the there will be no agency report in February. ® Community Service Board Members Reports: Alva Kreutzer: Alva reported that on the behalf of Beth Madden, she attended a discussion held by Northwest 2001. Welfare Reform Part II was a discussion with Howard Peters, Il. Dept. of Human Services. Mr. Peters talked of the recent consolidation of agencies within the state. This will work toward improved services among the different agencies. Alva attended a "Fighting Back" meeting on December 10, 1997. Fighting Back is conducting an adult facilitator program regarding the smoking cessation program. On January 30, 1998 Fighting Back is smoking (TATU) (Teens Against Tobacco Use). The purpose of this all day workshop is to teach young people between the ages of 14-17 to be trainers of children from ages 9-12. Multi-Cultural Directory Meeting -January 5, 1998. The Committee is in the process of updating the directory. Mary Cortes: Police Social Services and various community agencies will be developing a Mental Health Community Response Team to assist in case of a community crisis. The Community Health Alliance Chemical Dependency Task Force is developing a web site and educational packets to assist members in our community. Nancy Czarnik: Nancy attended the ceremony to award the Sheriffs Youth Service Medal of Honor Ceremony on December 2, 1997 at the James Thompson Center in Chicago, to Michael Voss and Michael Nalepa. Milk CSB Minutes Page four Pea Vallillo: Peg reported that in December she participated in several money raising activities at Walden Books and Kohl's Department Store for the benefit of Kenneth Young Center and for the Senior Services Division of Kenneth Young Center.
