HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 04/16/1998 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, April 16. 1998 Conference Room C - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Mary Cortes Jim Foss Mary Hale Paul Klevinsky Alva Kreutzer Salvatore Pace Ed Ruszkowski Peg Vallillo Board Members Absent: Nancy Czarnik Anne Feichter Ruth Guest Mary Paliganoff Dick Scholten ® Staff Present: Beth Madden Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Alva Kreutzer, Chairperson. A motion to approve the March minutes was made by Ed Ruszkowski, seconded by Sal Pace and approved by members of the Board. Agency Presentation: Given by Mr. John Buckley Mr. Buckley, program manager for the HIV Coalition passed out informative literature describing the HIV Coalition (HIVCO). He explained that HIVCO, a non-profit agency, has bought a building in the business area in the north side of Elk Grove Village. HIVCO services 235 clients from Cook, Lake, Kane, and McHenry counties with a food distribution program, educational resources, and services coordination. Volunteers are needed to help with the fund raisers, help with administrative duties, pick up food donations, inventory and pack food, deliver food, and help with food drives. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beth Madden Report in packet. Beth announced that the Senior Celebration Day will be held at Randhurst Mall on May 13, 1998. Committee Reports: Nominations Committee: Given by Paul Klevinsky ® Paul passed nomination forms to members present who voted for the new officers. The new officers for the 1998 term will be: ® CSB Minutes Pagetwo Chairperson: Alva Kreutzer Vice-Chairperson: Jim Foss Secretary: Mary Cortes Community Spirit Award: Given by Beth Madden A video showing several recipients being given the Community Spirit Award was shown. Alva Kreutzer reported on her meeting with Leslie DeMoss to discuss the criteria for the award. After discussion, the Community Service Board agreed that it might be a good idea for the Community Spirit Committee of the Community Service to have a meeting. Volunteer Committee: Given by Beth Madden A video of the Manor Care volunteer segment was shown. New Business: Paint-A-Thon: Given by Beth Madden A Paint-A-Thon will be held on September 12, 1998. Paint is donated, Catholic Charities of Wheeling will screen applicants, and volunteers, volunteer groups will be needed. At next month's Community Service Board meeting a form will be passed out to Board members to sign up to volunteer. Handyman Directory: Given by Beth Madden Beth described the Handyman's Directory of the Wheeling and Schaumburg Townships. A discussion followed and the members of the Board decided that more information was needed especially about disclaimers, and legal responsibilities of offering such information. Because the May meeting will have the Red Cross Training program, further information about the Handyman's Directory will be scheduled for the June meeting. Make A Difference Day: Given by Beth Madden A discussion was held about the Make A Difference Day event. A Committee made up of Alva Kreutzer, Ed Ruszkowski, and Mary Cortes will meet on Thursday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m. in the Community Service office to study it further. Old Business: Red Cross Shelter Operations Training: Given by Beth Madden The Red Cross Shelter Operations Training will be held on May 21st and May 28th after a short board meeting on the 21st at 6:30 p.m. Workforce Development Council Scholarship Committee: Given by Mary Cortes A total of five (5) applications were received. The Committee chose to give Mark Montague $400 scholarship and Robert Yee $800 scholarship. The scholarships will be awarded at a dinner in May. Sheriffs Senior Medal of Honor: Given by Beth Madden Beth announced that Jim Foss will receive the Cook County Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Award on Tuesday, May 21st at the Cultural Center in Chicago. CSB Minutes Page three Community Service Board Members Reports: Alva Kreutzer: There will be a down link for the "Children on Line" seminar at the Forest View Educational Center on April 23rd from 10:30- 12:30. The American Heart Association will host a breakfast on May 2nd from 8:30 - 1:30. On May 13th the Regional Prevention Group will be sponsoring a seminar on DUI's in our communities. Announcements: A Village Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, April 30, 1998 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Village Hall. The next meeting of the Community Service Board will be Thursday, May 21, 1998 at 6:30 p.m. Adjournment: The meeting adjourned after a move to do so was made by Paul Klevinsky and seconded by Jim Foss and approved by the Board.
