HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 01/18/2001 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS \`� MEETING MINUTES Thursday, Febre(ary 19, 2001 Conference Room C—Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Teresa Anesinis Jim Foss Nancy Czarnik Mary Hale Anne Feichter Mary Paliganoff Tony Kees Alva Kreutzer James Morrill Sal Pace Desmond Raftery Dick Scholten Peg Vallillo Call to Order: Alva Kreutzer, Acting Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Action Items: The minutes were approved as read after a motion to approve by Peg Vallillo and a second by Nancy Czarnik. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beverly Jaszczuroski Beverly reported on her work involving LIHEAP and CLEAR, programs from Commonwealth Edison to provide assistance for low income individuals or families that have difficulty keeping up with their electric bills. For those that qualify and are in arrears with their electric bill, the participants must pay one third of the bill, Com Ed pays one third, and LIHEAP pays one third. Bev also reported on the proposed Senior Advisory Council. A prelinimary meeting was held with professionals from various organizations serving seniors to ascertain whether or not to proceed. Bev reported that she has been working on budgets for United Way, as she is on their Board. Volunteer Committee: Bev received information on a new agency serving Elk Grove residents. It is called Escorted Transportation Service (ETS). They are looking for volunteers as well as promotion of this service to the community. They will be the Volunteer Opportunity of the Month for February and will be promoted on Channel 6, in the church bulletins, newspapers, bulletin boards at the library, senior centers, and at the Pavilion. Spirit Committee: Bev reported that the committee has received four more applications since the beginning of the year. The committee is looking for some new sponsors and to renew existing sponsorships ($500 to sponsor). Bev is applying for the Governors Award on behalf of the Spirit Committee. New Business: Des Rafftery reported that he would like to work on focusing on the family, particularly families in crises. He has already started drawing different agencies together to see if anything is missing in terms of help in this area. He asked the Board for ideas or suggestions. Des also had a second area of concern in terms—domestic violence—and would like to set up a support group for domestic violence survivors. Alva suggested that he put together a proposal or vision and present it to the Board. Old Business: Alva asked about the Elk Grove Village web page and stated that more could be on it regarding Community Service programs available. Nothing seems to have been done in months. Tony Kees brought up the Farmers Market and suggested the location be moving more east and closer to the berm. That might increase visibility. The Farmers Market is now controlled by the Park District. ® Bev said that the Community Service budget committee met and the budget was turned in to Gary Parrin, who approved the 3% increase. It now awaits approval by the Village Board. Trustee Report: No report except to announce that Nancy Czarnik and Rich Keyworth were taping a Koffee Klatch on the upcoming Elk Grove Night Parade. Announcements: The next Community Service Board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on February 15, 2001. Adjournment: A motion for adjournment was made by Dick Scholten and seconded by Anne Feichter. Coordinator's Repots: Given by Beverly Jaszczurowski Beverly's full report is in the packet. She mentioned that Village Voices, consisting of choir members from 7 churches, would be performing on February 25 at 3 pm at Elk Grove High School. Although the concert is free, a freewill donation is suggested. Beverly also reported that the office is taking applications for houses to be painted during the Paint-a-thon on September 8`h. Regarding the Village webpage, Peter Vadopalas is putting community service issues and announcements on the Elk Grove Events page. This will also include helpful information for new residents. Bev also reported that she and Mary Hale would attend a seminar in Chicago on organizing committees, boards, etc. Summer Activities Committee: Nancy Czarnik said that the committee is meeting on Monday evenings at 7 pm. She met with the Park District. There have been personnel changes and it is hoped that the Farmers Market will be more user-friendly and will have more and varied vendors. This summer the Farmers Market will start at 7 am, an hour earlier than last year, and will go until 1 pm. • Volunteer Committee: Anne Feichter reported that February's Volunteer Opportunity is Escorted Transportation Service (ETS) sponsored by the Lutheran Services. The organization was promoted on Channel 6, in the church bulletins, newspapers, and bulletin boards at the library and senior center. The March Volunteer Opportunity will be Big Brother/Big Sister and April will be the American Cancer Society. Spirit Committee: Nancy Czarnik reported for Mary Hale who was at a Channel 6 TV shoot. Several Spirit Award recipients were being honored and were being featured on channel 6. Among the recipients were someone who had collected socks for the needy, the couple who donated the Christmas tree for Elk Grove Village, a woman who have been taking care of a bedridden man, a grandmother caring for a very ill grandchild, and to Jarosch bakery for all their donations. The Spirit Committee is asking for volunteers to serve on the committee and will be seeking new sponsors. New Business: Bev said that letters from her office have gone out to agencies regarding nominations for the Volunteer of the Year Award, which is given out at the annual Village Dinner. Responses are needed by March 2. Bev also stated that she had received a letter on Monday regarding the Sheriffs Medal of Honor Award and the recipient's name was due on Friday. The Board determined that since there is virtually only 1 day to name a recipient, Bev would handle it. Bev also said that the Work Force Development Scholarship Fund did not pay out the scholarship money to the two recipients until January 26`h. The scholarship was awarded in April and the monies were to be paid directly to the school where the recipient has registered for classes. The money was there, but it just did not get distributed. Representation to the Governing Board would be made regarding administration of this Fund. Old Business: None Trustee Report: No report Announcements: Des Raftery said that he is working with a core group of 28 agencies, to make certain that families in crisis get assistance in all areas of need. He will be setting up a meeting to address this concern. The next Community Service Board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on March 15, 2001. ® Adiournment: A motion for adjournment was made by Alve Kreutzer and seconded by Mary Paliganoff.
