HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 03/22/2001 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, March 22, 2001 Conference Room C—Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Teresa Anesinis Nancy Czarnik Mary Hale Anne Feichter Jim Foss Tony Kees Alva Kreutzer James Morrill Sal Pace Mary Paliganoff Desmond Raftery Dick Scholten Peg Vallillo Call to Order: Jim Foss, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. Action Items: The minutes were approved with one correction, Mary Paliganoff did come before the meeting ended last month, after a motion to approve by Des Raftery and a second by Peggy Vallillo. Coordinator's Report: Given by Beverly Jaszczurowski Beverly's full report is in the packet. Beverly said that there are three nominations for Volunteer of the Year. The committee will meet and decide on the recipient or recipients. Arthur Erickson is this year's recipient of the Sheriff s Medal of Honor award. Bev also mentioned that a student volunteer, Roxanne Grimm, has been coming once a week to learn about agencies, youth employment services, etc. She has been shadowing as part of Elk Grove Village High School teacher, Jim Arey's Practicum course. Bev also reported that she and Mary Hale would attended a Executive Service Corps presentation in Chicago on how to assess your agency, committee recruiting for the right people, etc. They agreed to make short presentations in the monthly packets for the Board meetings on what they learned. Bev mentioned that the Elk Grove Community Garage Sale next May 191' needed more ® help. Teresa Anesinis and Peg Vallillo volunteered. . Summer Activities Committee: Nancy Czarnik reported that the committee is meeting on Monday evenings at 7 pm. The Farmers Market is moving to the front portion of the Pavilion parking lot. The committee is working on getting vendors, more media to attract more customers and bigger signage. The Farmers Market will start June 20 and go until October 24. Cooking classes and story time by the library is also in the works. Volunteer Committee: Anne Feichter reported that the Volunteer Opportunity for March is the Big Brother/Big Sister Program in conjunction with the Kenneth Young Center. The organization was promoted on Channel 6, in the church bulletins, newspapers, and bulletin boards at the library and senior center. The April Volunteer Opportunity will be the American Cancer Society and their Relay for Life Fundraiser. Spirit Committee: Mary Hale said that the committee was not looking for volunteers or sponsors at this time. They are always looking for possible award recipients. They has been nominated for the Hometown Award and will get either I't 2"d or 3rd place when the awards are announced in June. There is a Channel 6 TV shoot on Marth I Vh. There will also be a sub-committee comprised of the students from Jim Ayre's Practicum course who will select Spirit awards on the youth level. Web Committee: Jim Morrill said the committee met and came up with some ideas to better communicate what is offered by the Community Service Office. Some items may be changed by Bev herself; others can only be changed by the village staff. The committee will assist Bev with pertinent items. New Business: Des Raftery reported that October is domestic violence awareness month. He made the suggestion that this be combined as part of Make a Difference Day. Des hopes to set up a Survivors of Domestic Violence Group. He plans to talk to Wendell Jones' office as there may be a Domestic Violence for Women Shelter"in the works"for the Northwest suburbs. Des will make a presentation to the Board in June or July on these plans. Mary Hale stated that Christus Victor Lutheran Church will organize the Walk to benefit PADS on September 15d'. El Bethel Church will not be a part of this. Old Business: Nancy Czarnik asked Jim Foss about the free movies at Elk Grove Cinema once a week for 6 weeks during the summer. It will happen, but they have not worked out details on dates and times. Bev reported that the Workforce Development Corps now has packets to submit to the businesses for financial donations. The past recipients have received the scholarship money which was paid directly to their schools. Trustee Report: No report except to mention Hoe Down, a new village event which will take place next September. Announcements: The next Community Service Board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on April 19, 2001. Adjournment: A motion for adjournment was made by Tony Kees and seconded by Jim Foss.
