HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 08/15/2002 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, August 15, 200 Conference Room C -Lower Level, Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Teresa Anesinis Stacey Bechtold Nancy Czarnik Jim Foss Anne Feichter James Morrill Mary Hale Desmond Raftery Fred Ilossfeld Tony Kees Mary Paliganoff Staff Present Beth Thompson Michael Cavallini Peg Vallillo Call to Order Mary Hale, president, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Action Items: The minutes from the July 16, 2002 meeting were reviewed. Mary Hale noted the cellular phone discussion belonged under MADD Committee, not Old Business. The minutes were approved, as amended, after a motion by Anne Feichter and a second by Peg Vallillo. Coordinator's Report: Given by Mary Hale. The full report prepared by Marty Vela is included in the packet. Community Service was informed by the Salvation Army of a tentative allocation of$11, 889 for Fiscal Year 2003 (July 1, 2002 - June 30, 2003). This tentative amount is for the entire Elk Grove Village Service Unit, including the Elk Grove Township office. Community Service continues to receive pizzas for the Food Pantry from Pizza Hut. Marty continues to visit the Food Pantry on Thursdays to process the client intake paperwork. Richard Keyworth, a member of Greater O'Hare Network Executives, along with the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Greater O'Hare Association.will be sponsoring a.food drive.collection. Attendees at a meeting on November 21 will be asked to bring a food item donation for the Elk Grove Presbyterian Church Food Pantry. Committee Reports: Bylaws Committee: Given by Mary Hale No report. Community Spirit Committee: Given by Mary Hale The Committee needs more members. Mike Cavallini will include something in the ® Village newsletter about new member applications. Farmer's Market Committee: Given by Nancy Czamik The Committee met on Monday and decided to allow craft vendors at the Market on alternate Wednesdays when there are no events scheduled. Vendors will offer baked glassware and plates, silver jewelry and scented candles. MADD Committee: Given by Mary Hale A paper drive will collect paper products (diapers, toilet paper, etc.) that have no expiration date and can be stored until needed. A cellular phone recycling program will collect cell phones that can be distributed to seniors and victims of domestic violence after they are programmed to dial 911 and one non-emergency number. Personnel Committee: Given by Mike Cavallini Seven candidates were interviewed, then Mike Cavallini and Village Manager Gary Parrin interviewed the top two candidates. Both finalists are excellent candidates, with a long history of social and community service. A decision will be announced soon. Volunteer Committee: Given by Anne Feichter The focus for September will be P.A.D.S. Channel 6 already had plans to promote the Historical Society (Pioneer Days). Web Committee: Given by Mary Hale Mary distributed copies of the updated Community Service web site. Information includes a list of Board members and a description of Community Service awards and programs. New Business: There was a general discussion about the Community Garage Sale. It was not scheduled for 2002, but will be considered again for 2003. Old Business: A calendar of events will be distributed with the Community Service Board Meeting Minutes. Items to be listed should be forwarded no later than the first week of the month. Trustee Resort: Given by Nancy Czarnik Nancy will not be able to attend the September and October meetings of the Community Service Board. Nancy informed the Board that all charities, including United Way, are having a difficult time with fundraising. This will have an effect on Community Service. Board Members Report: Mike Cavallini suggested a change in format for the monthly Service Report prepared by the Community Service office. Currently each item is listed by date, sometimes with only one item for the entire day. A monthly calendar or spreadsheet format can better represent the many responsibilities of the office, including meetings attended by the Community Service Coordinator and Spanish translations completed by staff. Announcement: The next Community Service Board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2002 in Conference Room C in the Lower Level of the Municipal Building (Village Hall).
